Alastair Cook reaches 10,000 runs
England captain Alastair Cook has become the youngest player in history to score 10,000 Test match runs.
The opening batsman’s four from the bowling of Nuwan Pradeep took him past the milestone aged 31 years and 157 days, 175 days younger than Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Cook has 28 test centuries to his name and has forged a career as one of the game’s best ever opening batsmen.
Cook made his debut for England in India ten years ago as a replacement for Marcus Trescothick and Michael Vaughan. He scored 60 in his first innings and 104 not out in the second, as hasn’t looked back since.
The captain, like most batsmen, has had a few ups and downs and has came close to being dropped on a few occasions but has always battled well to retain his place.
Tendulkar holds the world Test record with 15,921 runs and if Cook continues playing for another five or six years, it’s feasible that he could break the Little Master’s record.
