Joe Root won the toss under cloudy skies at the Adelaide Oval and had no hesitation in bowling first as he looked to get his side level in the series, but the day ultimately belonged to the hone side.
Australia finished the day on 209/4 and will look to pile on the runs on Day Two.
Australia, unsurprisingly, kept an unchanged XI for the first ever Day/Night Ashes Test whilst England dropped Jake Ball and selected Craig Overton, who made his Test debut.
Here’s how the players rated on a rainy Day One:
James Anderson - 4
Bowled poorly first up with too many short balls but came back after the break looking much better. Took the wicket of Khawaja but still wasn’t anywhere near his best.
Stuart Broad - 4
Had good control, as usual and whilst he didn’t go for many runs, he didn’t threaten enough.
Chris Woakes - 5
Ran out Bancroft with a direct hit and got the wicket of Warner too. Should have had Khawaja caught after a good short ball but Mark Stoneman dropped the catch. Gave away too many easy runs.
Craig Overton - 6
Had the ball moving a lot and caused a few issues for the batsmen. Got his first Test wicket with his first ball of the evening session as he bowled Steve Smith with a ball that just moved off the seam.
Moeen Ali - 4
Caused Khawaja a fee problems early on but didn’t threaten too much in the limited overs he bowled.
David Warner - 7
Played well for his 47, keeping our the good balls and punishing the bad ones. Will be annoyed at how he got out; trying to cut a ball that was too straight.
Cameron Bancroft - 5
Looked in pretty good touch before the calamitous run out.
Usman Khawaja - 7
Had a few issues with Moeen Ali early on but got into a good groove to get to 50. Should have been caught by Stoneman on 44 but was gone straight after the Dinner break, playing a loose shot to edge a ball from Anderson to Gully.
Steve Smith - 6
Didn’t look as faultless as he did in Brisbane but getting him out proved tough for a long time. In the end, he got a bit unlucky as the ball hit his pad and went onto the stumps.
Peter Handscomb - 7
It wasn’t pretty but Handscomb ended the day on 36*, surviving in pretty difficult batting conditions.
Shaun Marsh - 7
England had their tails up after dismissing Smith but Marsh, whilst only scoring 20*, brought an air of calm and didn’t really look like getting out.
