AB de Villiers claims World Cup win will only be a “bonus”
South African cricketer AB de Villiers has revealed that winning the World Cup is not his main target after coming so close to securing the trophy in 2015, according to a report on Cricket365.
De Villiers was the captain of the team then as they lost in the final over against New Zealand in the semi-final.
It was a well-known fact that De Villiers was desperate to add a world cup winners medal to his trophy cabinet but he now claims that he has moved on from that obsession.
When speaking about the upcoming world cup, De Villiers said:
My ultimate dream is not to win a World Cup. I’ve changed my mindset. I feel it will be nice to win it, it’ll be a bonus, but if I don’t, it’s not going to define my career.
I’ve committed to all three formats last season and I loved every second of it. I’ll take it one game at a time from here on.
The 34-year-old is eager to remain fit and healthy for next year’s tournament and believes that there are many other moments of his career that will be more noteworthy than a world cup win.
South Africa will be confident going into the tournament after beating Australia last month in their Test series.
