County Round-up: 24th-30th July
One Day Cup – North Group
Riki Wessels smashed an 85-ball 114 to guide Nottinghamshire to a 65-run win over Derbyshire at Welbeck. Chris Read also made 59 from 39 deliveries as the Outlaws posted 340-7 from their 50 overs. Ben Slater was the only Derbyshire batsman to pass 50 as they were all out for 275.
Rikki Clarke took 5-26 as Warwickshire thrashed Worcestershire by eight wickets at Edgbaston. The visitors were blown away for just 115, and Warwickshire knocked the runs off inside 23 overs with Tim Ambrose making 54.
Rob Keogh struck 134 off 110 balls as Northamptonshire beat Durham by a huge 170 runs at Wantage Road. Rob Newton also made 65 as the hosts hit 335-6 and Azharullah (5-43) starred with the ball as Durham were bowled out for 185.
A fantastic partnership of 274 between Travis Head and Jack Leaning sent Yorkshire to a 191-run victory over Leicestershire at Grace Road. Head struck 175 from 139 balls and Leaning 131* from 110 balls as Yorkshire posted 376-3. Lewis Hill hit a half-century but the hosts could only make 185.
Warwickshire beat Northamptonshire by eight wickets at Edgbaston. Alex Wakely (70) and Josh Cobb (50) helped Northamptonshire to 254-9, but the hosts chased their target down with two overs to spare thanks to 92 from Will Porterfield and 88 from Sam Hain.
Mark Pettini hit 92 and Mark Cosgrove 91 as Leicestershire beat Lancashire by 131 runs at Grace Road.
Northamptonshire claimed a 23-run over Worcestershire despite a century from Tom Kohler-Cadmore at New Road. Northamptonshire made 319-7 from their 50 overs thanks to 87 from Adam Rossington, 86 from Ben Duckett and an unbeaten 52 from Steven Crook. The hosts were bowled out for 296 as Kohler-Cadmore hit 119 and Tom Fell 54.
Tim Bresnan struck an unbeaten 95 to steer Yorkshire home against Nottinghamshire with just two balls remaining at Scarborough. Steven Mullaney (89*) and Dan Christian (52) helped the Outlaws recover from an early collapse to 251-9, but Bresnan starred with the bat to give Yorkshire a two-wicket win.
Sam Hain’s 107 was in vain as Durham beat Warwickshire by 4 wickets at Gosforth. Ambrose supported Hain with 86, but Durham chased down their target of 293 with 14 balls remaining. Paul Collingwood smashed 53 off 33 balls to seal the win for Durham after Scott Borthwick and Keaton Jennings made 66 and 56 respectively.
Lancashire beat Derbyshire by 27 runs at the County Ground. Liam Livingstone (98) and Steven Croft (68) guided the visitors to 281-8, and Derbyshire could only make 254-9 despite 91 from Billy Godleman.
One Day Cup – South Group
Peter Trego (80) and Jim Allenby (53) played key roles with the bat as Somerset beat Glamorgan by 33 runs at Taunton.
Centuries from Paul Stirling (112) and Eoin Morgan (103*) guided Middlesex to a six-wicket win over Kent at Lord’s. Sean Dickson’s 99 and Darren Steven’s 61 were in vain as Middlesex knocked off the runs with 31 balls remaining.
Gloucestershire claimed a 51-run win against Sussex at Cheltenham. Chasing 253 to win, Sussex were reduced to 191 all out as Tom Smith took 4-26 from his 10 overs.
Jesse Ryder’s 110-ball 131 could not prevent Essex from slipping to a 66-run defeat at home to Surrey. The visitors made 313-8 from their 50 overs with contributions from Steven Davies (82), Jason Roy (55) and Rory Burns (52). Essex were then bowled out for 247 inside 41.2 overs.
Somerset beat Middlesex by four wickets at Taunton. Nick Gubbins and Stirling made 89 and 58 respectively as Middlesex hit 296-9 from their 50 overs. The hosts chased down their target with just one over remaining; Trego once again top-scored for Somerset with 104 and he was backed up with 69 from Lewis Gregory.
An opening partnership of 203 between Joe Denly (105) and Daniel Bell-Drummond (91) helped Kent to a comfortable five-wicket win over Hampshire at the Aegeas Bowl. Matt Coles took 6-56 as Hampshire were all out for 229, with Adam Wheater scoring 63. The visitors knocked their target off with 6.3 overs to spare.
Essex produced a brilliant run chase to beat Glamorgan by four wickets at Chelmsford. Colin Ingram smoked 107 from 73 balls and David Lloyd made 62 as Glamorgan posted 324-8 from their 50 overs. Nick Browne hit 99, Ravi Bopara 59 and Ryder 50 as Essex reached their target with just five balls remaining.
Hampshire had a narrow nine-run victory over Sussex at Hove. Jimmy Adams made 92 as Hampshire scored 268-9, before Chris Nash (69*) and Ben Brown (62) failed to get Sussex over the line.
Surrey claimed an emphatic 165-run win over Gloucestershire at the Oval. Steven Davies hit 79, Sam Curran 57 and Rory Burns 50 as Surrey posted 323-8 from their 50 overs. Gloucestershire were then skittled out for 158 as Gareth Batty took 5-41 with Hamish Marshall making 55.
Somerset overcame Sussex by 10 runs at Taunton thanks to 106 from Tom Abell and five wickets from Jofra Archer.
T20 Blast – North Group
Michael Lumb (68* off 51 balls) and Dan Christian (54* off 16 balls) tore the Leicestershire bowling attack apart as Nottinghamshire won by eight wickets in a rain-hit match at Trent Bridge. Mark Cosgrove made 53 for the Foxes but it was not enough to prevent the hosts claiming an eighth successive T20 win. The Outlaws finished top of the North Group.
Yorkshire finished third as they overcame fellow quarter-finalists Northamptonshire by 14 runs at Wantage Road. Jack Leaning smashed 64 off 29 balls and Alex Lees made 59 as Yorkshire made 170-4. The hosts could only make 163-7 as Alex Wakely struck 64 from 42 balls and Bresnan took 3-15.
Durham beat Derbyshire by 13 runs at Chester-le-Street to seal a quarter-final place. Calum MacLeod struck 83 off 50 balls and Mark Stoneman 82 not out off 56 balls as the hosts made 193-2 from 20 overs. Derbyshire fell short on 180-9 with Neil Broom hitting 68 from 43 deliveries.
Lancashire beat Warwickshire by 30 runs in a low-scoring affair at Old Trafford as Saqib Mahmood took 3-12 from 4 overs.
T20 Blast – South Group
Ashar Zaidi smashed an unbeaten 24-ball 59 as Essex claimed a five-wicket win over Middlesex at Lord’s. In a reduced match to 16 overs, Dawid Malan made 68 as Middlesex posted 126-5, but the visitors reached their target with three balls to spare.
The clash between Sussex and Glamorgan was ruined by rain after the Welsh side had been dismissed for just 101.
Colin Ingram blasted 101 from 56 balls but rain ended Glamorgan’s fixture with Essex at Chelsmford. Glamorgan finished second, whilst Essex finished fourth.
Gloucestershire ensured that they topped the South Group as they beat Middlesex by four wickets. Jack Taylor steered Gloucestershire to their target of 157 as he made an unbeaten 44 from 23 balls. Middlesex will also be in the quarter-finals as they finished third.
Opener Jason Roy smashed 120 not out from just 62 balls as Surrey beat Kent by 37 runs at the Oval. Aaron Finch also made 79 from 51 balls in an opening partnership worth 187. Sam Northeast hit 59 in Kent’s reply.
Hampshire thrashed Somerset by 83 runs at the Aegeas Bowl. Tom Alsop hit 85 from 57 deliveries before Liam Dawson took fantastic figures of 5-17.
Player of the week – Colin Ingram
The South African had a sublime week as he posted two centuries. The first one came in the One Day Cup fixture against Essex, before he smashed 101 from 56 balls against the same county before it was washed out by the rain.
County of the week – Yorkshire
The White Rose county won all three of their white ball fixtures this week. Victories over Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire in the One Day Cup all but sealed their place in the quarter-finals, and they did confirm their place in the quarter-finals of the T20 Blast with a fine win over Northamptonshire.
