Having put Australia into bat, England will have been disappointed to have only have taken four wickets on Day One of the Test and went into the second day looking for quick wickets.
However, by the end of the day, which came early because of rain, England found themselves trailing by a massive 413 runs after they finished on 29/1. This came after Steve Smith had declared with his side on 442/8.
Here’s how the players rated on Day Two:
Stuart Broad - 5
Took the early wicket of Handscomb and bowled well first up. Got Starc again but never really got into a groove where he looked constantly dangerous. Took some stick from Marsh at the end of his innings.
James Anderson - 4
Had the ball moving more and had two LBWs taken away from him on review. Looked good but failed to take any wickets again.
Chris Woakes - 4
Bowled fine at times but just lacked that bit of something extra that’s needed in these situations. Got a bit unlucky when a catch was dropped as two fielders collided.
Craig Overton - 6
Got the wicket of Paine with a good short ball and toiled hard for his side. Removed Cummins with a good short ball too, probably England’s most threatening seamer.
Moeen Ali - 2
Created a few near misses but nowhere near enough to genuinely worry Australia. His lack of wickets is really hurting England and he’s too easy to score against.
Alastair Cook - 6
Survived the opening bust from the Aussie quicks before the rain came. Didn’t look 100% in control at all times but played pretty well.
Mark Stoneman - 4
Actually started quite well, scoring 18 from 21 with good intent before Starc got him LBW with a decent ball.
Peter Handscomb - 1
Was gone to the third ball of the day, trapped LBW as he was so deep in his crease yet again.
Shaun Marsh - 10
Played nicely for the first hour or so and went from strength to strength to reach a fantastic Test hundred. He put England to the sword at the end of the innings as Australia looked for quick pre-declaration runs and ended unbeaten on 126*.
Tim Paine - 8
Counter attacked well as soon as he got to the crease, hitting a few boundaries. Got hit on the hand again before getting caught in the deep after a good 57 from 102 balls.
Mitchell Starc - 7
Played a horrible shot that went straight up in the air.
Took the only England wicket to fall with a full ball that trapped Stoneman LBW.
Pat Cummins - 8
A thorn in England’s side yet again, Cummins batted well for his. It took him a long time to get off the mark but he hung around yet again, providing great support for Marsh, like he did for Smith in Brisbane.
Thought he had Cook caught behind but the umpire correctly gave it not out.
Nathan Lyon - 7
Peppered with the short ball and just about coped, with a bit of luck along the way.
Josh Hazlewood - 6
Bowled well first up with a few LBW appeals that were correctly not given out.
