After defeat in the first two tests, England knew that they needed a big performance in Perth to claw their way back into the series.

England named an unchanged side for the Third Ashes Test match in Perth, whilst Australia replaced the out of form Peter Handscomb with all-rounder Mitchell Marsh.

Joe Root won the toss and, unlike at Adelaide, he decided to bat first and at stumps, his side were on 305-4 courtesy of a fantastic fifth-wicket stand between Dawid Malan (110*), who notched his first test hundred, and Jonny Bairstow (75*).

Here’s how the players rated on the first day of the Third Test.
