England went into the fifth Test knowing that they had this series wrapped up with a score of 3-1, but there was only one man dominating the headlines on Day One.
England won the toss and decided to bat first. Alastair Cook announced earlier in the week that he will be retiring from international cricket after this fifth Test and was given a guard of honour by the India team as he came out to bat.
Cook is undoubtedly an England legend and he’s leaving international cricket with some brilliant records to his name.
The former captain has not been at his sparkling best during this series, but he definitely upped his game in this first innings. The same, however, cannot be said about the rest of the order as they tumbled one after the other as England lost six wickets for 48 runs, meaning they ended the day on a score of 198-7.
Here’s how all of the players rated from Day One of the fifth Test:
Alastair Cook - 7
The retiring legend managed to hit an impressive 71 runs in his final Test match to send the home crowd wild. This was the 89th time that he passed the 50 mark in Test cricket.
Keaton Jennings - 3
Jennings was once again not at his best and was dismissed with a disappointing 23 runs. His shot to get out was really poor.
Moeen Ali - 6
The star of the 4th Test did well on what was a poor day of batting for England. He hit a half-century to make his side’s score look respectable.
Joe Root - 1
Root was dismissed for zero runs and the only reason he’s getting one rating is for going out onto the pitch. Disappointing from the captain.
Jonny Bairstow - 1
Bairstow followed the example of his captain and also failed to score any runs. It seems he’s not fully recovered from that broken finger.
Ben Stokes - 3
Stokes tried to play in a calm fashion but was out for 11 missing a sweep shot to be out plumb LBW to Jadeja.
Jos Buttler - 2
Buttler ended the day not out but only scored 11 runs. Nothing spectacular to note.
Sam Curran - 1
Another player who failed to score any runs. Curran’s bowling was brilliant in the last Test but his batting today was poor.
Adil Rashid - 2
Rashid scored 4 runs from 25 balls, which is well below average. Ended the day not out alongside Buttler.
Jasprit Bumrah - 7
Bumrah has been impressive throughout the series and he didn’t read the script as he bowled out Alastair Cook. He also dismissed captain Cook. A fine performance.
Ishant Sharma - 9
Sharma was in fine form for India and took three wickets. Really stepped up his performance and the England batsmen could not cope with him.
Mohammed Shami - 8
Shami failed to take a single wicket and after bowling 22 overs, which seems poor but in truth, he bowled really well but was rather unfortunate.
Ravindra Jadeja - 7
Jadeja came into the team for this Test and proved his worth by taking two wickets. A good day’s work from him.
Rishabh Pant - 7
The wicketkeeper was in good form and contributed to England’s downfall by making three catches. Did well to help dismiss Moeen.
