England put themselves in a good position after Day One of the First Test and they pushed home that advantage on Day Two, finishing on 38/0, a hugely significant lead of 177.
England resumed their first innings on 321/8 and added 21 to that total to finish on 342, with Ben Foakes making 20 of those as he reached a century on debut.
England then got to work bowling and they were dominant with the ball, skittling Sri Lanka out for 203, with Moeen Ali the pick of the bowlers, taking 4/66.
Here’s how the England players rated on Day Two:
Ben Foakes - 10
Another great day from Ben Foakes. He added the runs he needed to reach a century on debut and he was excellent behind the stumps. His stumping of Dinesh Chandimal was superb, as was his catch of Akila Dananjaya. He’s making Test cricket look very easy.
Jack Leach - 9
He didn’t hang around for long with the bat but Jack Leach bowled very well. He had complete control, keeping the scoring rate down. He very much deserved the two wickets that he took.
James Anderson - 7
He might not have scored any runs but the fact Anderson didn’t get out before Foakes reached a century was significant. Anderson didn’t do a lot of bowling but he set the tone with the new ball, getting Dimuth Karunaratne out in the first over.
Sam Curran - 7
Like Anderson, Sam Curran didn’t need to bowl much but he too got an early wicket, trapping Kaushal Silva LBW.
Moeen Ali - 10
The pick of England bowlers was Moeen Ali. He took four wickets and had control all day. A great day’s play for England’s premier spinner.
Adil Rashid - 8
He only bowled nine overs but Adil Rashid was excellent. He had complete control, which hasn’t always been the case with him and he looked very threatening. His ball to get Chandimal stumped was a beauty.
Ben Stokes - 4
Only bowled four overs and tried to be aggressive but didn’t really threaten too much.
Rory Burns - 7
Took a nasty blow in the field at short-leg but he shook that off to open the batting. Got to 11* and didn’t look in any trouble at all.
Keaton Jennings - 7
Took a good catch at short-leg to get rid of Angelo Mathews straight after tea. Made a very quick 26* from 44 balls to help put England into an excellent position going into Day Three.
