England are in complete control of the First Test against Sri Lanka after an impressive performance on Day Three in Galle, with Sri Lanka needing another mammoth 446 runs to win, whilst England need to take ten wickets.
The visitors started the day on 38/0 and ended it on 310/5, with Keaton Jennings making his second Test match hundred to help set up a declaration, whilst Ben Stokes, Joe Buttler and Ben Foakes also made significant contributions.
England put Sri Lanka into bat for just seven overs at the end of the day as they looked for a couple of wickets but Sri Lanka batted out the day, ending play on 15/0, knowing they have a huge task ahead of them to save the game.
Here’s how the England players rated on Day Three.
Rory Burns - 4
Burns looked a bit uncomfortable against spin and that seemingly got in his head as he pushed for a single to get off strike but ended up being run out.
Keaton Jennings - 10
Scored 141* and bar an LBW shout that he survived, he didn’t look in much trouble at all. He was solid in defence and swept the spinners really well.
Moeen Ali - 1
Played an absolute horrendous shot to chip the ball straight to the fielder. Not a great game in terms of batting for Moeen if he wants to establish himself as a Test match number three. Bowled a few overs at the end but didn’t really threaten.
Joe Root - 2
Root gave his wicket away in the first innings but he can’t be accused of that in the second. He lasted just 19 balls before getting out to a very good ball from Rangana Herath.
Ben Stokes - 9
Made a very good score of 62. He was watchful at first before he looked to push the scoring rate with some big shots. The ball that got him out spun a lot, although he’ll be disappointed to get bowled to a ball that pitched outside leg stump.
Jos Buttler - 7
With England in control, Jos Buttler was able to go on the attack. He played some beautiful shots to reach 35 before he was excellent caught at silly point.
Ben Foakes - 8
After a controlled display in the first innings, Ben Foakes showed that he too can attack by making a quick-fire 30* from 28 balls as England looked to get fast runs before a declaration. Ended the day with an amazing piece of work to almost stump Kaushal Silva but the batsman just made his ground.
