- Leaders Essex all out for 149
- Warwickshire fight back against Sussex
- Surrey put Leicestershire to the sword
It was an intriguing opening day in the County Championship Division One, with a mix of early dominance and unexpected setbacks across the grounds. Early leaders Essex found themselves under pressure at home to Somerset, while Surrey laid a solid foundation against Leicestershire, setting up a compelling start to the round.
Essex v Somerset
Somerset won the toss and elected to field first at Chelmsford, and that decision certainly paid off. Essex were reduced to 14-2, when a 63-run partnership between Dean Elgar (41) and Charlie Allison (49)settled the ship a little. However, No one else really troubled the scorers as Essex were bowled out for 149. Josh Shaw was the pick of the bowling with 3-30 from 11 overs.
In reply, Somerset struggled early as well, losing the first three for only 16 runs. James Rew (48)and Tom Abell (29) brought Somerset back into the game with a 57-run partnership. At the close of play, Somerset, leading by 30 runs, are 179-5, with Lewis Goldsworthy (28*)and Craig Overton (50) at the wicket.
Nottinghamshire v Glamorgan
Glamorgan won the toss at Trent Bridge and sent the home team into bat. Captain Hasseb Hameed wasn’t having a great day, losing the toss, and then losing his wicket first ball!
It looked like Nottinghamshire were going to struggle at 103-6, but Jack Haynes (100), with help from Fergus O’Neill (59) took the home side to a respectable 279 all out. Timm van der Gugten (4-54) and Ryan Hadley (4-76) were the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers.
Fergus O’Neill then removed Eddie Byrom (1) and Asa Tribe (3)and reduced Glamorgan to 4-2. O’Neill’s opening 6 over spell went for 2-6 with four maidens. Zain ul Hassan (27) and Kiran Carlson (26) steadied the ship a little, and at close of play, Glamorgan are 81-4, 198 runs behind with six wickets in hand.
Surrey v Leicestershire
It must be something in the water, as Leicestershire also won the toss, elected to field, and may well come to regret that decision.
Captain Ian Holland would have been encouraged early on when Surrey slipped to 42-2 at the Oval. However, a superb 200-run partnership for the third wicket between England stars Jamie Smith (166) and Ollie Pope (103) swung the momentum firmly in Surrey’s favour.
Ben Foakes added to the pressure, ending the day unbeaten on 62, as Surrey closed on a commanding 412-6. Tom Scriven was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 2-75.
Sussex v Warwickshire
Warwickshire bucked the trend at Hove, winning the toss and choosing to bat first. However, at 22-3, they may have wondered if bowling would have been the better option.
A recovery effort led by Beau Webster (48), Kai Smith (53) and Chris Woakes (64) helped lift Warwickshire to 267 all out. Last week’s standout bowler Henry Crocombe was among the wickets again with 3-44, while Tom Price supported well with 3-71.
In reply, Daniel Hughes (8*) and Tom Haines (9*) will resume on day two with Sussex 250 runs behind but all 10 wickets intact.
Yorkshire v Hampshire
Yorkshire won the toss at Headingley and elected to field, putting Hampshire into bat. After losing Joe Weatherley for 0, Hampshire recovered well, with Tom Lehmann top-scoring with 76. Support came from Nick Gubbins (43), Ben Mayes (39) and Tom Prest (35), giving them a solid platform. However, a collapse saw 204-6 become 251 all out, with George Hill the standout performer, taking 5-46.
Yorkshire’s innings began with an early setback as Finlay Bean was dismissed for 1 with the score on 7. Adam Lyth (20*) and Sam Whiteman (14) steadied things briefly, taking the total to 37, but a burst of three wickets in five balls from Sonny Baker (3-16) left Yorkshire reeling. They closed the day on 48-4, still 203 runs behind.
