Shubman Gill delivered a captain’s innings of authority and elegance as the Gujarat Titans brushed aside the Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets in Ahmedabad.
At the vast Narendra Modi Stadium, the chase of 181 never truly spiralled out of control. The reason was simple: Shubman Gill. The Titans skipper produced a composed yet commanding 86 off 50 balls, dictating the tempo with assurance and silencing any hint of pressure.
Gujarat Titans 181 for 5 (Gill 86, Varun 2-34) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 180 (Green 79, Rabada 3-29, Siraj 2-23, Ashok 2-45) by five wickets. Full scorecard available here.
Gill takes control of the chase
From the outset, Gill looked in complete control. Crisp drives pierced the infield while his calculated aggression saw him clear the ropes with ease.
Eight boundaries and four sixes underlined an innings that blended finesse with intent. Crucially, he denied Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy any opportunity to seize momentum during the middle overs.
Strong support keeps Titans steady
Support came in measured bursts. Jos Buttler contributed a steady 25 in a useful stand that laid the foundation, while Sai Sudharsan added a brisk 22 to keep the scoreboard moving.
Even after Gill departed in the 17th over, there was little panic. Glenn Phillips and Rahul Tewatia calmly guided the Titans home with nine balls to spare.
Early strikes set the tone
Earlier in the evening, the contest had tilted sharply in Gujarat’s favour thanks to their pace attack. Kagiso Rabada returned figures of 3 for 29 and Mohammed Siraj claimed 2 for 23, both striking with precision and menace to exploit early movement.
Kolkata were left reeling at 32 for 3 inside four overs. The early damage included a first ball dismissal for captain Ajinkya Rahane, a moment that summed up a difficult season for the Knight Riders.
Cameron Green fights a lone battle
There was resistance, and it came through Cameron Green. His spirited 79 off 47 balls injected life into the innings and lifted Kolkata to 180 for 7, a total that briefly promised a contest. Yet the lack of meaningful contributions from the rest of the batting order left them short of a truly competitive edge.
Shubman Gill masterclass lifts Titans momentum
The result reinforces Gujarat’s growing stature this season. Their blend of pace, control and batting depth is beginning to look formidable, with Gill leading from the front both tactically and with the bat.
For Kolkata, the picture is far less encouraging. Five matches have yielded no victories, leaving them stranded at the foot of the table. Time is running short to address persistent top order failures, and unless solutions arrive quickly, their campaign risks slipping beyond recovery.
Ahmedabad, meanwhile, continues to echo with the confidence of a side that knows how to close out games.
