  • Delhi Capitals IPL profile: new era signals hope for a first-ever title
  • Rebrand, 2020 final, and captaincy changes reflect inconsistency
  • Missed stars like Virat Kohli define “what could’ve been” legacy

As one of the world’s richest sports leagues, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is inherently associated with glitz and glamour. However, this has not been the experience of the Delhi Capitals, who currently boast the unwanted title of being the IPL’s least successful side. Missed opportunities and poor recruitment have been an enduring part of the franchise’s story so far, as their bid for a maiden IPL title goes on.

Despite a name change, attempts to shift the franchise’s identity and leadership alternations, the Capitals are still yet to find a winning formula that will catapult them out of the shadows and ahead of the league’s perennial winners.

Change From Daredevils to Capitals Yet to Bring Much Craved Success

Following 11 years of relative sparseness in the IPL wilderness, the Delhi Daredevils rebranded as the Delhi Capitals in an attempt to turn their fortunes around. Co-owner Parth Jindal explained the role of the new name as being to reflect Delhi’s status as the nation’s capital.

Despite the ambition of the ownership to freshness things up and the Capitals reaching their first final in 2020, either side of runs to the play-offs, they have still been unable to deliver the seismic maiden title that would well and truly thrust the franchise into the limelight.

Delhi’s returns have undoubtedly improved since their name change, with no last place finishes and their aforementioned final loss against the Mumbai Indians.

Regardless, their returns have diminished over the past four seasons, which Axar Patel was tasked with resolving, when he was appointed as captain in 2025.

The Long Wait for a Title and Trophy Cabinet Full of Wooden Spoons

As mentioned, the Delhi Capitals are one of three sides still yet to get their hands on the IPL trophy, following Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally breaking their duck in 2025.

The other two franchises yet to get over the line are the Punjab Kings, who are unbeaten so far in this year’s edition and the Lucknow Super Giants, whose inclusion in this category feels somewhat unfair, given they only formed in 2022.

The Capitals’ record number of last placed finishes since the league’s inception in 2008 is a much more damning insight into their profligacy.

They first propped up the table in 2011, before back to back miserable campaigns saw them finish last in both 2013 and 2014.

Their record fourth last placed finish came in 2018, sparking their name change in a bid to shed their reputation of serial underachievers.

Chopping and Changing of the Captaincy

A significant element of the Capitals’ pursuit for success has been regular captaincy changes, as the franchise have strived to find a winning formula.

Their inability to do this so far is demonstrated in the different types of captains that they have tried, without yet striking gold.

They have fluctuated from players known for their aggressive, swashbuckling styles to characters renowned for being much more measured.

Gautam Gambhir replaced the franchise’s inaugural captain Virender Sehwag, whilst more recently the steady, reliable Axar Patel succeeded the enigmatic Rishabh Pant.

Such chopping and changing has the ability to cause confusion for a playing group and contrasts with the approaches of the IPL’s more successful franchises.

The Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have both won the title on five occasions, with these franchises synonymous with the leadership of Indian stalwarts MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma respectively.

The Ones that Got Away and Made Delhi Pay

The Capitals’ story could have been so much better, if they had made some better choices, when choosing and structuring their squads over the years.

They famously turned their back on the prospect of signing Virat Kohli at the IPL’s inception in 2008, citing the presence of Sehwag, Shikhar Dhawan, Gambhir, Tillakaratne Dilshan and AB de Villiers in their squad.

Although at the time this may have seemed like shrewd judgement, Kohli has since gone on to become the highest run-scorer in the history of the IPL.

Following his captaincy stint, the Capitals released Gambhir, who went on to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to three titles, with one of these being as their coach.

The Capitals’ most recent error of judgement was their decision to let former captain Shreyas Iyer depart, as within four years of leaving the franchise, he had captained KKR to the title in 2024 and the Punjab Kings to the final in 2025.

Success at the Mega Auction Aiming to Bring a More Prosperous Future

Coinciding with the installation of Axar Patel as the franchise’s latest captain, the Capitals made some strong acquisitions with an eye on both the present and the future.

KL Rahul’s signing complimented the pick of Sameer Rizvi, who was just 20 years of age at the time.

Rahul amassed 539 runs in the season that followed, whilst Rizvi started the 2026 season imperiously, with scores of 70* and 90.

The Capitals also decided to retain Tristan Stubbs, who continues to make a name for himself and gain more experience now, with the promise of a maturing international cricketer in the years to come.

After a solid fifth-placed finish in 2025, the Capitals are firmly in with a chance of reaching the play-offs this season, as they sit level on points with fourth-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad and have a game in hand.

Delhi Capitals’ IPL existence has long been defined by false dawns and near misses, but with Patel at the helm and an improving batting group, they might well have a brighter future beckoning them.
