Mitchell Starc is finally on course to make his much-anticipated debut for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026, with the Australian quick cleared to travel to India after overcoming a troublesome shoulder and elbow injury.

The 36-year-old left-arm pacer has not featured in competitive cricket since late January, but signs now point toward an imminent return. After a week of pain-free bowling in Sydney, Starc is expected to arrive in India shortly, with a potential comeback lined up against Rajasthan Royals on May 1 in Jaipur. Injury Setback After Heavy Ashes Workload

Starc’s absence traces back to a demanding Ashes campaign where he led Australia’s attack with authority. He picked up 31 wickets at an average of 19.93 and bowled a taxing 153.1 overs across five Tests, underlining his value as a frontline strike bowler.

His workload carried into the Big Bash League, where he represented the Sydney Sixers. However, a heavy fall while attempting a catch against Perth Scorchers resulted in damage to his left shoulder and elbow. Though he initially took time off, lingering soreness during his return to bowling in February delayed his IPL participation.

With fitness concerns now easing, Starc’s return could not be better timed for Delhi Capitals. The franchise has been waiting for its marquee signing, and his availability from early May could significantly strengthen their bowling attack during a crucial phase of the tournament.

Starc himself had earlier addressed speculation surrounding his absence, clarifying the nature of his injury amid widespread confusion. Now, with clarity and recovery on his side, expectations are building around his impact in the competition.

Australia Quick Trio Near Full Fitness

The positive development extends beyond just one player. Australian captain Pat Cummins is also closing in on his IPL return with Sunrisers Hyderabad, having recovered from a lower-back issue that has kept him out since mid-December.

For Cricket Australia, the return to fitness of Starc, Cummins and Josh Hazlewood represents a significant relief. With a packed schedule ahead, including a potential 20 to 21 Tests between August 2026 and August 2027, Australia are also set for a return to Bangladesh in June for a six-match white-ball tour featuring an ODI series, their first in the country since 2011.

A new broadcast deal will ensure full coverage for Australian audiences, adding further weight to an already demanding calendar. Managing the workload of their premier fast bowlers remains critical.

As the IPL moves into a decisive stretch, Starc’s arrival promises fresh energy, pace and firepower. If all goes to plan, Jaipur could witness the first glimpse of one of the world’s most feared fast bowlers in Delhi Capitals colours.
