At a glance
- Lots of runs on display
- Centuries for Weatherald and Bean lead fightbacks
- Nottinghamshire struggling a little
Day two bought plenty of runs as the sun beamed down and the wickets become harder and easier to bat on. Run scoring is still defining the games, with sides making comebacks after some big first innings totals.
Out of the four games, only one looks like it might have a result other than a draw.
Nottinghamshire v Warwickshire
Warwickshire resumed on 375-8 on day two, hoping to build on their first innings total, and that’s what they did. Ed Barnard added 34 runs to his overnight total as he was the last man out for 165. Michael Booth added 44 runs this morning as he was out for 70, as Warwickshire ended the innings on 459.
Josh Tongue was the pick of the bowlers with 5-124. Lyndon James took the two wickets to fall this morning to finish with 3-79.
Nottinghamshire’s innings didn’t get off to the greatest of starts as Haseeb Hameed (0) and Ben Slater (26) were both back in the pavilion with the score only on 36. Ben Duckett did his England claims no harm with 62, and Joe Clarke scored 94.
However, Nottinghamshire ended the day on 264-8, still trailing by 195 runs with only two wickets remaining. Michael Booth, fresh from his 70, took 3-59, aided by 2-44 by Chris Woakes.

Yorkshire v Sussex
Sussex would have thought they were in a strong position starting the day on 373-6. However, the overnight centurion, John Simpson only added 35 more runs to end on 136. Yorkshire chipped away, but Skipper Ollie Robinson scored a quickfire 40* at the end of the innings, as Sussex were bowled out for 502, a total, that Sussex might be a little disappointed with.
Jack White starred with the ball, taking 4-60, with George Hill taking 3-86. Yorkshire, on the other hand, might have been the happier of the two teams.
That may not have lasted long though, when Adam Lyth was out for only 6 with the score on 17. However, that was the only Yorkshire wicket to fall for the rest of the day as Finlay Bean (102*) and Sam Whiteman (73*) took their side to end the day on 192-1, 310 runs behind with nine wickets remaining. Yorkshire are in a really strong position, after day two – with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow to come, and the pitch looking like a batting paradise.
Fynn Hudson-Prentice took the only wicket to fall and has figures of 1-29. The rest of the bowlers will want to make early inroads, if Sussex are to get anything from this game.

Surrey v Essex
Another game where the side batting first were in a strong position going into day two, as Essex came out to bat on 325-6. Noah Thain (64) and Simon Harmer (41) moved the score on, however Essex’s innings ended soon after as they were all out for 409.
Dan Lawrence ended the innings with 3-14, with two wickets apiece for Tom Lawes (2-89) and Sean Abbott (2-80).
Early wickets gave Essex a little bit of hope as both Rory Burns (2) and leading run scorer Jamie Smith (5) were out with the score only on 29. Dom Sibley (74*) and Ollie Pope (69) put on 105 for the third wicket when Pope was out caught and bowled by Jamie Porter. Dan Lawrence joined Sibley and ended the day on 38* and Surrey were 192-3, trailing by 217 runs with seven wickets in hand.
Jamie Porter took 2-33 and the only other wicket was taken by Shane Snater (1-43). Essex will want quick wickets in the morning, however, seeing how many runs have been scored at the Oval so far this season, this might as issue.

Glamorgan v Leicestershire
Glamorgan started the day on 334-7, with Timm van der Gugten and Mason Crane at the wicket. Both players were out stumped, van der Gugten (52) to Ben Green and Crane (99) to Ajaz Patel, as Glamorgan’s innings came to a close on 440ao.
Four bowlers took 2 wickets each, the best being Ian Holland with 2-33. Ben Green ended up with 2-66 and Ajaz Patel ahd 2-146. Josh Hull (2-84) was the other one.
Leicestershire reply got off to a great start, as Jake Weatherald (104*) and RIshi Patel (79) put on 167 for the first wicket. Weatherald ended up being retired hurt, but Ian Holland (16*) and Josh Davey (10*) will look to push on on day three, as they resume on 215-1, a further 225 runs behind.
The only wicket that fell went to Kiran Carlson, who has 1-15 from 6 overs. Glamorgan will need to take early wickets, if they want to pick up their first win of the season.
