Somerset have confirmed that Tom Kohler-Cadmore has suffered a fractured thumb following further medical checks, dealing an early-season setback for the county side.

The injury occurred during Somerset’s second County Championship fixture against Essex County Cricket Club at Chelmsford, when Kohler-Cadmore was struck while attempting a slip catch. View the full scorecard of the match here.

Initial assessments suggested the damage was serious but stopped short of identifying a break, offering a degree of optimism in the immediate aftermath.

Somerset Injury Confirmed After Reassessment

That outlook has now shifted. Follow-up examinations have confirmed a fracture, forcing the 31-year-old into a spell of recovery and rehabilitation at a pivotal point in the campaign.

At the time of the incident, head coach Jason Kerr outlined the extent of the issue, explaining that the batter’s thumb had swollen significantly and left him unable to grip a bat or contribute in the field.

Replacement and Match Impact

Will Smeed replaced Tom Kohler-Cadmore during the match, making the journey from a 2nd XI fixture to join the squad at short notice.

The confirmed fracture meant Kohler-Cadmore also missed Somerset’s tense 2-wicket win over Hampshire County Cricket Club in Round 3, with the mandatory 8-day stand-down period under current injury-replacement regulations ruling him out.

Timeline for Return and T20 Blast Hopes

It is an unwelcome interruption given his bright start to the season. The right-hander had already made a statement with a commanding century against reigning champions Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, underlining his value within Somerset’s batting order.

Attention now turns to his rehabilitation, with Somerset hopeful of a timely return. Kohler-Cadmore has been a central figure in the club’s white-ball success, including 2 T20 Blast titles in 3 years, and there is quiet optimism he could be back in contention for the T20 Blast opener against Hampshire on May 22.

For the moment, Somerset regroup without one of their key performers, though there remains confidence that his recovery will be both smooth and swift.
