Abhishek Sharma’s rise to the summit of T20 cricket carries the unmistakable influence of Yuvraj Singh, whose mentorship has helped shape one of the most explosive batters in the modern game.

Now the No. 1-ranked T20I batter, Abhishek Sharma is enjoying a standout IPL 2026 season. Yet behind the runs, strike-rates and match-winning knocks lies a transformation that began during the COVID-19 lockdown, when Sharma trained closely with his childhood idol.

The Lockdown Camp That Sparked a Transformation

Speaking on JioStar, Sharma reflected on that period as a defining chapter in his development, both technically and mentally.

“Training with Yuvi paaji was a huge moment for me. I had looked up to him since I was a child. He was my idol. He gave me some guidance early on, but we did not have much time together.

“Then came the lockdown. I think Yuvi paaji saw it as an opportunity to work closely with a few players. I was lucky to be one of them,” Sharma said on JioStar.

What followed was more than routine training. Under Yuvraj’s watch, Sharma began to reshape his approach to the game, moving away from simply building innings to dominating them.

What Yuvraj Told Abhishek Sharma That Changed Everything

At the heart of this evolution was a message that shifted Sharma’s outlook entirely. It was not about domestic success or short-term gains, but about preparing for cricket’s biggest stages.

“When our camp began, he said something that truly changed my belief. He told me that the training and mindset we were building was not just for domestic cricket or IPL, and not just for playing a few games for India.

“He said that he was preparing me mentally to win big matches for India, to play impactful innings, and to deliver with the ball when it matters most,” he added on JioStar.

That clarity of purpose is now evident in Sharma’s fearless batting. His innings often tilt matches within a few overs, reflecting a mindset built for pressure and impact.

From Early Inspiration to IPL 2026 Dominance

Sharma’s journey, however, began long before elite mentorship. Raised in a cricketing household, he was inspired early by his father, a former Ranji Trophy player for Punjab and a coach.

“There was a strong cricketing environment at home from the start. My father played Ranji Trophy for Punjab and was also a coach. Watching him inspired me to take up the game,” Sharma said.

Television memories of India’s high-stakes clashes further fueled his ambition.

“When I watched India-Pakistan matches or World Cup games on TV, I felt motivated. I used to think that I wanted to play at that level too,” he said.

In IPL 2026, Sharma has translated that ambition into numbers that underline his impact. Representing Sunrisers Hyderabad, he has scored 380 runs in 8 matches at an average of 54.29 and a strike-rate of 212.29.

His tally includes 1 century and 3 half-centuries, placing him second on the run charts behind Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has amassed 400 runs in 9 matches.

Beyond the figures, it is the authority and composure in Sharma’s game that stand out. Each innings reflects the imprint of a mentor who understood what it takes to succeed on the biggest stage.

As IPL 2026 unfolds, Sharma’s ascent feels less like a sudden breakthrough and more like a carefully shaped journey. With Yuvraj’s influence embedded in his game, he looks ready not just to score runs, but to define moments.
