At a glance
- Sussex tail wag at the Oval
- Somerset in charge at Taunton
- Lots of runs in the other two games
The first day of Round 5 in Division One of the County Championship is in the books. The Oval has been a batting paradise so far this season, but Sussex struggled. Somerset in control at home, and runs galore at Grace Road and Southampton.
Surrey v Sussex
It’s been a very up and down day at the Oval. What has been a batting paradise turned into a horror show for Sussex’s top order, as Surrey reduced the away side to 92-7. Then the tail wagged as two partnerships set Sussex up.
Firstly, Fynn Hudson-Prentice (53) and Jack Carson put on 75 for the eighth wicket. Then Carson, who scored 105, and Ollie Robinson (100*) put on a mammoth 173 for the ninth wicket. Robinson brought up his hundred with a six, then declared with his side on 358-9.
For Surrey, Jordan Clark was the star man, with figures of 5-68 and Matthew Fisher took 3-92. Surrey started their first innings and are 19-0 in reply.

Somerset v Yorkshire
Somerset won the toss and chose to bowl, a decision that quickly paid off. Yorkshire lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually dismissed for 162.
Finlay Bean top-scored with 35, while Jonny Bairstow made 34 and Joe Root 33. George Hill was the only other batter to reach double figures, contributing 18.
Skipper Lewis Gregory was the pick of the Somerset bowlers, as he took 6-43. Craig Overton took 2-42, Alfie Ogbourne had 1-38 and Migael Pretorius took 1-21.
Somerset’s reply began poorly as they slipped to 35/3, but Josh Thomas (136*) and Tom Abell (41*) steadied the innings with an unbroken 165-run stand for the fourth wicket.
Their recovery lifted Somerset to 201/3 by stumps, giving them a lead of 39. They will aim to build a significant advantage on Day 2 and push towards an innings victory.
Jack White (2-36) has two of the three wickets to fall so far, with Jhye Richardson (1-54) taking the other one. Yorkshire will want quick wickets if they are to stay in the game.

Hampshire v Glamorgan
Hampshire will be regretting winning the toss and deciding to field as Glamorgan piled on the runs. Asa Tribe (45) was the only wicket to fall on 79.
Zain ul-Hassan (131*) and captain Kiran Carlson (158*) have put on 274 run partnership for the second wicket. Glamorgan will be aiming to build a commanding total and put themselves in a position where they won’t need to bat again.
Kyle Abbott (1-64) took the only wicket for the day, as the rest of the bowlers toiled. They will need quick wickets to stay in the game.

Leicestershire v Nottinghamshire
Leicestershire’s decision to bowl first proved costly. Haseeb Hameed (42) was the first wicket to fall at 97, before a 131-run stand between Ben Duckett (77) and Ben Slater put Nottinghamshire in control.
Slater then added a further 150 for the third wicket with Joe Clarke (80*), as the visitors closed on 405/4. Slater led the way with an outstanding 178 from 276 balls, including 24 fours.
Ben Green took 3-88 and was the best of the bowlers. Ajaz Patel (1-69) took the other wicket to fall. It’s already looking a tough ask for Leicestershire at this stage.
