At a glance

  • Northamptonshire destroy Worcestershire
  • Derbyshire need to bat all day
  • Middlesex v Durham heading for stalemate

With day three in the books in the County Championship Division Two games, there will be only two to finish tomorrow, in the Bank Holiday sunshine.

Northamptonshire v Worcestershire

Northamptonshire started the day on 366-5, holding a lead of 60. George Bartlett added 19 to his overnight score before falling for 54. A 192-run partnership for the seventh wicket between James Sales (146*) and Lewis McManus (104) then allowed Northamptonshire to declare on 597-7, setting Worcestershire a daunting target.

With only two wickets falling during the day for Worcestershire, there was little impact with the ball. Tom Taylor added one to his tally to finish with 3-97, while Brett D’Oliveira took 1-83.

Worcestershire began the chase poorly, with Jake Libby dismissed for 4 at 5-1, and Dan Lategan following for 17 at 38-2. A 50-run stand between Gareth Roderick (33) and Adam Hose (33) briefly offered some resistance.

However, once that partnership was broken at 88, Worcestershire collapsed, losing their final seven wickets for just 26 runs to be bowled out for 114. Northamptonshire secured victory by an innings and 177 runs.

Ben Sanderson was the standout performer with the ball, taking 7-31 from 17 overs—including six wickets in just 29 deliveries—to finish with match figures of 11-109, a career best. Harry Conway, Luke Proctor and James Sales claimed the remaining wickets.

Kent v Derbyshire

Kent started day three on 38-2, leading by 86. Sam Northeast was run out without adding to his overnight 4, and with Daniel Bell-Drummond also dismissed for 4, Kent slipped to 42-4.

Ekansh Singh fell cheaply as well, but a 67-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Tawanda Muyeye (36) and Chris Benjamin steadied things.

After Muyeye’s dismissal, a 184-run stand for the seventh wicket between Benjamin (123) and Joey Evison (88) extended Kent’s lead to 354.

Kent’s last two wickets fell quickly, and they were bowled out for 335, setting Derbyshire a target of 383. Rory Haydon took 5-81, while Ben Aitchison (2-75) and Martin Andersson (2-33) provided support.

Derbyshire had 11 overs to negotiate late in the day, but with the penultimate ball, Matt Milnes removed Caleb Jewell to leave them 19-1, still needing 365. An intriguing final day awaits at Canterbury.

Middlesex v Durham

Durham started the day on 135-1, trailing Middlesex by 295 runs. Ben McKinney added just 12 to his overnight score before falling for 58. Last week’s heroes, Emilio Gay and David Bedingham, then led the recovery with a 153-run partnership for the third wicket.

Gay made 129 and Bedingham 147, while a later stand of 67 between Kasey Aldridge (99) and Ben Raine (33) helped Durham reach parity.

Durham closed on 530-8, leading by 100 runs with two wickets remaining. Ryan Higgins was the pick of the bowlers with 4-99, while Zafar Gohar took 2-150. Sebastian Morgan and Joshua De Caires claimed one wicket each.

The game appears to be heading for a draw, with both sides still needing to bat again on the final day.
