County Championship Division Two Review: Round 5 Day 4

At a glance

  • Only two games after Worcestershire’s defeat yesterday
  • Kent win big against Derbyshire
  • Middlesex and Durham draw

With Worcestershire’s defeat to Northamptonshire wrapped up inside three days, only two Division Two fixtures remained in play heading into the final day.

Kent secured a dominant first win of the season with a heavy victory over Derbyshire, while Middlesex and Durham were forced to settle for a draw after bad light ended any lingering hopes of a result.

Here is how the final day unfolded.

Kent v Derbyshire

Derbyshire started the day on 19-1, needing a further 365 runs to win and a whole day to get them. However, things didn’t go according to plan. Luis Reece top scored with 67, but only four other batters made double figures, as Derbyshire were rolled over for 158, as Kent win by 225 runs.

Matt Milnes got his career best innings figures of 6-12 off 15 overs. Keith Dudgeon, Joey Evison, Jaskaran Singh and Ekansh Singh took the other wickets to fall.

Kent, with their first win of the season, are in sixth, and Derbyshire drop to seventh, still without a win. Kent travel to Bristol to take on Gloucestershire, and Derbyshire are at home to second place Northamptonshire.

Middlesex v Durham

Bad light brought an end to play, and with no result other than a draw possible, both sides decided to shake hands just after tea on the final day.

Durham started the day on 530-8, a lead of 100 with two wickets in hand. They added 37 runs before being all out for 567, a lead of 137. Matthew Potts scored 38 and Callum Parkinson scored 28 at the end of the innings.

With a draw the most likely result, Middlesex started their innings and Sam Robson was out with the score on 7. Durham needed wickets quickly if they were going to claim the win, but they didn’t materialise quick enough, as Middlesex were 146-4 when bad light brought an end to play. Max Holden was 77* when play finished.

Bowling wise, Ben Raine took 3-23 to end with match figures of 8-81, and Matthew Potts took the other wicket to fall.

Middlesex sit fifth and next travel to Old Trafford to face Lancashire, while leaders Durham head to New Road to take on Worcestershire.
