England’s T20I and Royal Challengers Bengaluru opening batter Phil Salt has returned to England for scans on a finger injury, at the request of England’s management.

Salt sustained his injury to a finger on his left hand whilst diving to save a boundary at deep backward square leg during RCB’s defeat of Delhi Capitals in the middle of April.

Salt has been replaced in the side by his England counterpart, Jacob Bethell, who himself has come under some criticism from former pros. Bethell hasn’t played much in this IPL. He came in to replace Salt for the last three games, and has scored only 39 runs.

However, former pros like Sir Alastair Cook have hinted that Bethell would be better suited to playing for Warwickshire in the County Championship, rather than not playing at all.

Salt’s IPL stats

Salt has had a great start to this season’s IPL. He has scored 202 runs in six innings at an astounding strike rate of 168.33. His overall IPL career is pretty good too. In 40 innings, he has amassed 1258 runs, at an average of 34.00, but a strike rate of 174.48.

His England stats are just as impressive. In 56 innings, Salt has scored 1717 runs, at 34.34, with a 165.89 strike rate. He is key to the England T20i team, as they prepare for five T20is against India at the beginning of July. Lancashire will also want Salt fit for their Vitality Blast campaign, which starts in at the end of May.

Both RCB and Salt are hopeful of a speedy recovery and the opener can return to India later this month.
