Nottinghamshire v Surrey
Nottinghamshire went top after their impressive victory over Leicestershire, who they beat by 10 wickets. Ben Slater got 178 in the first innings, as Nottinghamshire posted 490. Ollie Stone took 5-68 in Leicestershire’s first innings and Liam Patterson-White spun his way to 5-53 from 36 overs.
Nottinghamshire Squad: Hameed (c), Clarke, Duckett, Haynes, Hutton, James, Lord, McCann, O’Neill, Patterson-White, Pennington, Slater, Stone, Tongue, Verreynne
Surrey are coming into the game after their first win of the season against Sussex, winning by 8 wickets. Two big scores for very different reasons for Surrey as they amassed 622.
Dom Sibley scored 187, and went past 10,000 first class runs in the process. The other big score was by Adam Thomas. The 19-year-old debutant scored 120 off 181 balls, in a 161 run partnership for the eighth wicket with Sean Abbott, who scored 76 off 71 balls.
Surrey Squad: Burns (c), Abbott, Albert, Atkinson, Clark, Fisher, Foakes, Lawes, Lawrence, Patel, Pope, Sibley, Smith, Taylor, Thomas, Topley
Glamorgan v Somerset
Glamorgan had a massive win last week, as they beat Hampshire by an innings and 69 runs. Batting only once, captain Kiran Carlson scored 209 off 232 balls, and Zain ul-Hassan scored 143 as Glamorgan declared on 536-7. That win moved the side up to fifth in the table.
Glamorgan Squad: Carlson (c), Byrom, Cooke, Crane, Dickson, Gorvin, Hadley, Ingram, Kellaway, Tribe, van der Gugten, ul-Hassan
Somerset slumped to their first loss of the season last week, as Yorkshire beat them by 75 runs. Chasing 259 to win, they were spun out for 184, with Dom Bess and Joe Root taking four wickets apiece. Look for Mason Crane to have a good game…
Somerset Squad: Overton (c), Abell, Ball, Goldsworthy, Lammonby, Leach, Ogborne, Pretorius, J. Rew, T. Rew, Shaw, Smeed, Thomas, Vaughan
Sussex v Leicestershire
Sussex will want to bounce back from defeat to Surrey last week. Sussex struggled in the first innings, as they were at one point 92-7. However, centuries for Jack Carson (105) and Ollie Robinson (100*) got them to 358-9 dec. They will need the top and middle order to fire this week. Sussex slipped to sixth after that loss.
Sussex Squad: Robinson (c), Carson, Clark, Coles, Crocombe, Haines, Hudson-Prentice, Hughes, Leaning, Price, Simpson
Leicestershire also lost last week, slipping to a 10 wicket defeat to Nottinghamshire. Stephen Eskinazi scored 100 in the first innings, but they were still forced to follow on. The rest of the batters need to start scoring runs or this will be a long season for Leicestershire, who currently sit in ninth.
Leicestershire Squad: Holland (c), Cox, Davey, Eskinazi, Green, Hill, Hull, A. Patel, R. Patel, Ahmed, Scriven, Singh, Tattersall, Weatherald, Wood
Warwickshire v Yorkshire
Warwickshire were on a bye last week, so should be rested for the match against Yorkshire. In their last outing, they played out a draw with Nottinghamshire. Captain Ed Barnard scored 165 in their only innings in that game, and they enforced the follow on, bawling Nottinghamshire out for 279, after getting 459 in the first innings.
Warwickshire Squad: Barnard (c), Bamber, Barker, Booth, Davies, Gilchrist, Hain, Malik, Mousley, Smith, Thompson, Webster, Woakes, Yates
Yorkshire beat leaders Somerset last week, winning by 75 runs. James Wharton (92) and Joe Root (64) put on 123 for the third wicket, as they set Somerset 259 to win. However, the side struggled in the first innings, being bowled out for 162.
Yorkshire Squad: Bairstow (c), Bean, Bess, Coad, Duke, Hill, Luxton, Lyth, Revis, Richardson, Root, van Beek, Wharton, White, Whiteman
Essex v Hampshire
Essex were the other side with a bye last week. Their previous match ended in a draw against Surrey, with Essex piling on more than 700 runs across the game.
Centuries from Paul Walter (101) in the first innings, along with an unbeaten 107 from Dean Elgar and 136 from Tom Westley, powered the batting effort. Elgar also scored 92 in the first innings and looks to be in excellent form right now.
Essex Squad: Westley (c), Allison, Benkenstein, Cook, Critchley, Elgar, Harmer, Pepper, Porter, Snater, Thain, Walter, Akhter
Hampshire sit bottom of the table and were well beaten by Glamorgan last week, losing by an innings and 69 runs. The only score of note was from captain Ben Brown, who scored 96 in the second innings. This needs to improve or it will be a season to forget for Hampshire.
Hampshire Squad: Brown (c), Abbott, Albert, Baker, Yusuf, Currie, Dawson, Gubbins, Jack, Lehmann, Mayes, Middleston, Organ, Prest, Weatherley
