- Emilio Gay has scored three County Championship centuries this season
- Reports suggest England selectors are considering Gay for the New Zealand Tests
- Zak Crawley’s struggles have intensified scrutiny around the opening role
Reports are gathering pace that Durham opener Emilio Gay is firmly in contention for an England Test call up ahead of this summer’s series against New Zealand after another commanding display in the County Championship.
The 25-year-old strengthened his growing case with a superb 129 at Lord’s against Middlesex, an innings full of authority and composure that underlined why many inside the game now see him as a genuine option at the top of England’s order.
Having resumed overnight on 75, Gay continued to bat fluently before eventually falling to off-spinner Joshua De Caires as Durham closed on 530 for 8, leading by exactly 100 runs heading into the final day.
It marked Gay’s third Championship century of the season and took his tally to 473 runs at an outstanding average of 94.6. Only Joe Clarke has scored more runs in the competition so far this campaign and Gay’s consistency is becoming increasingly difficult for England selectors to ignore, especially with the new impending appointment of Marcus North .
England Opening Spot Under Fresh Scrutiny
With Zak Crawley enduring a difficult start to the summer for Kent, speculation is mounting that England may look to freshen up their opening combination before the first Test at Lord’s next month. Crawley has managed just 177 runs at 22.1 this season and is still searching for his first half-century of the campaign.
Should England decide to make a change, Gay appears to have moved firmly into pole position.
The Durham batter already knows the Lord’s honours board well this season and there is a growing sense that another walk through the famous Long Room could soon arrive in England colours.
Emilio Gay in Line to Open for England After Impressive Rise
Gay’s rise has been fuelled not only by runs but also by a confident approach that appears perfectly suited to the aggressive environment created under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.
Speaking recently about his development with the England Lions, Gay credited Andrew Flintoff for encouraging him to embrace self belief at the crease rather than shy away from the spotlight.
Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly podcast, Gay revealed how influential Flintoff’s advice had been during the winter.
“Freddie was massive with me on mindset. He obviously had that aura, call it arrogance or confidence, when he went out there. And he noticed that I sometimes have a bit of a strut when I walk out to bat.
“He just congratulated me on having a strut. I was like, ‘Wow, like really?’ He was like, ‘Yeah, we want you to have that.’ He mentioned Baz and Stokesy and said all of us want that confidence. If there’s any England team that’s ever wanted confidence, it’s this one.”
That confidence has become increasingly evident in Gay’s batting. Whether opening or operating at number three for Durham, the left-hander has looked calm under pressure and eager to impose himself on attacks.
His move from Northamptonshire ahead of the 2025 season was made with England ambitions firmly in mind and it now appears to be paying off.
England management have already monitored Gay closely through the Lions set up and his performances in Australia over the winter further elevated his standing.
While both West Indies and Italy previously explored the possibility of Gay representing them internationally through family heritage, the opener has consistently made clear that his ambition lies with England.

Elsewhere in the County Championship, Joe Root continued his preparations for the international summer with a polished 64 for Yorkshire against Somerset at Taunton.
