  • Joe Clarke century gives Notts the advantage
  • 14 wickets fall at Warwickshire
  • Thomas and Abell in the runs for Somerset

Day one of the latest round of the County Championship produced plenty of action across the country, with both runs and wickets dominating the headlines. Batters enjoyed success in several matches, while bowlers made strong impacts at venues such as Warwickshire and Essex.

Nottinghamshire v Surrey

Bad light brought an early end to play at Trent Bridge, with Nottinghamshire holding a slight advantage at the close of day one. Surrey won the toss and chose to bowl first, a decision that paid off early as the hosts slumped to 18/2. Ben Duckett made 42 before falling with the score at 105/3.

Jack Haynes and Joe Clarke then steadied the innings with an impressive 146-run partnership for the fourth wicket, putting Nottinghamshire back in control. Haynes was eventually dismissed for 82 with the score on 251/4, before another collapse saw three quick wickets fall, leaving the hosts struggling at 256/7.

However, Fergus O’Neill (32*) provided valuable support to Clarke, who remained unbeaten on 129 at stumps.

For Surrey, Dan Worrall led the bowling effort brilliantly with figures of 5/61, while Sean Abbott chipped in with 2/63. An intriguing second day awaits, weather permitting.

Glamorgan v Somerset

This match remains evenly balanced after an entertaining opening day, with both teams feeling they gained the upper hand at different stages. Glamorgan won the toss and elected to bowl first, putting the visitors in to bat.

James Rew, opening the innings amid talk of a potential England call-up, was dismissed early for just four runs. Josh Thomas (71) and Tom Lammonby (45) then rebuilt the innings with a solid 133-run stand for the second wicket before both fell in quick succession, leaving the score at 138/3.

Wickets continued to fall steadily around Tom Abell, who anchored the innings with a composed 86. By stumps, the batting side had reached 337/9.

For Glamorgan, Tom Norton was the standout bowler with figures of 3/75. Timm van der Gugten (2/57), Ryan Hadley (2/67), and Zain ul-Hassan (2/61) also made important contributions with the ball.

Day two promises to be another fascinating contest as both sides look to seize control of the match.

Sussex v Leicestershire

Another match finely balanced after day one saw Sussex win the toss and elect to bowl first against Leicestershire.

Openers Rishi Patel and Jake Weatherald gave the visitors a strong start with a 92-run partnership before a mix-up between the pair led to Patel being run out for 45. Soon after, Weatherald departed for 43, slapping a long hop from Jack Carson straight to Tom Clark, leaving Leicestershire at 108/2.

Wickets continued to tumble through the afternoon, and at 209/7, Sussex appeared to have taken control of the game. However, Ian Holland (63) and Tom Scriven (50) produced a valuable 73-run partnership to swing momentum back in Leicestershire’s favour.

The visitors were eventually bowled out for 328. Sussex then safely negotiated five overs before stumps, reaching 3/0 without any damage.

Despite the long hop to remove Weatherald, Jack Carson was the pick of the bowlers. He took 4-40 from 13 overs. Ollie Robinson, possibly in line for an England recall, took 3-85. Another game where early wickets or early runs will swing the game in either team’s favour.

Essex v Hampshire

There were plenty of wickets on the opening day at Chelmsford after Essex won the toss and chose to bowl first against Hampshire. The decision looked to be the right one early on, with Hampshire reduced to 88/4.

However, Jake Lehmann (89) and Ben Brown (73) steadied the innings with an important 105-run partnership for the fifth wicket, taking the score to 193/5. Despite their efforts, little support came from the rest of the batting line-up, and Hampshire were eventually bowled out for 235.

Wiaan Mulder (3/46) and Sam Cook (3/56) were the standout bowlers for Essex, while Jamie Porter, Shane Snater, and Simon Harmer claimed a wicket each.

Essex then had 22 overs to negotiate before stumps, but two quick wickets left them under pressure at 42/2, with Paul Walter and Dean Elgar both dismissed cheaply. In-form batter Tom Westley (24*) and nightwatchman Sam Cook safely guided Essex through to the close at 51/2.

Kyle Abbott and James Fuller picked up the wickets for Hampshire. The match remains finely poised heading into days two and three.

Warwickshire v Yorkshire

Another wicket-filled day unfolded at Edgbaston, with 14 dismissals falling on what is usually considered a good batting surface. Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bowl first — a decision that proved highly effective as Warwickshire were bundled out for just 147, a week after being dismissed for 114.

Only three Warwickshire batters managed to reach double figures, with Sam Hain top-scoring with 57. Zen Malik made 10, while Ethan Bamber contributed 28 lower down the order.

Yorkshire used just four bowlers, and all of them made an impact. Jack White was the standout performer with figures of 4/49, while Ben Cliff (2/33), George Hill (2/27), and Logan van Beek (2/33) shared the remaining wickets.

In reply, Yorkshire looked set to take complete control but suffered an early wobble as they slipped to 38/3. By stumps, they had recovered to 110/4, still trailing by 37 runs.

James Wharton currently leads the scoring with 40, while Harry Brook (29*) and Jonny Bairstow (9*) remain unbeaten heading into day two, leaving the match finely balanced.

For Warwickshire, Ollie Hannon-Dalby impressed on his return from a loan spell at Worcestershire, taking 2/25. Ethan Bamber claimed 1/25, while Jordan Thompson chipped in with 1/13. If Brook and Bairstow settle in on the second morning, Warwickshire could face a challenging day in the field.
