Urvil Patel’s 13-ball fifty for Chennai Super Kings against Lucknow Super Giants on May 10 night lit up Chepauk with one of the craziest innings the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed. He tied the record for the quickest half-century in IPL history with Yashasvi Jaiswal, thanks to the innings.
Following Sanju Samson’s fast 28 from 14 balls, LSG had a brief opportunity to calm the game down. But Urvil, who just walked into the crease, had some different plans. When the youngster walked in, he started tearing bowlers apart right away, turning Chepauk into chaos. As he smashed his way to a 13-ball fifty, the Chennai Super Kings batter equaled the IPL record for the fastest half-century.
The young batter pulled out an emotional note from his pocket as he celebrated his record fifty. There was a handwritten page with the message, “This is for you, PAPA.” With a spectacular show of power-hitting, Patel brought Chepauk to its feet and destroyed the LSG bowling attack right away.

Urvil Patel Fearless Approach
Digvesh Rathi, a leg-spinner, was the target of the right-hander’s most vicious over, in which he hit five straight sixes to throw the fans into a frenzy. In just 13 deliveries, Patel reached his half-century thanks to the attack, equaling the record established by Yashasvi Jaiswal for the Rajasthan Royals against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2023 Indian Premier League.
After reaching the milestone, Patel continued to attack the bowlers fearlessly and showed no signs of slowing down. A few overs later, Rathi dropped a catch, giving him a reprieve, but Lucknow eventually fought their way back into the match. Shahbaz Ahmed finally ended Patel’s explosive innings as Avesh Khan completed the catch near the boundary. Patel departed after a stunning 65 off just 22 balls, but in the space of a few overs, he had completely changed the tone of the match.
LSG Sets Huge Score for CSK Batters
The Chennai Super Kings were cruising at 127/2 and needed just 77 more runs in a little over 10 overs by the time Patel walked back. The batter had already broken the back of the chase. Josh Inglis’ innings and some late hitting from Shahbaz Ahmed had helped LSG cross the 200 mark and appear firmly in control before Urvil turned the game on its head.
Confidence was further dented by CSK’s poor record in big chases. Since 2018, Chennai had failed to chase down a target of 180 or more in the IPL. But Sunday night at Chepauk felt different. Urvil Patel delivered the kind of innings that both rewrote history and signalled the future as he helped Chennai Super Kings complete a thrilling five wicket victory and successfully chase down their first 200 plus target in seven years.
For much of 2025, Chepauk had become a venue where visiting teams dominated and home supporters often left disappointed. This time, however, the 32,825 fans in attendance witnessed one of CSK’s brightest young talents announce himself on the big stage with the joint fastest half-century in IPL history. It was the kind of night that restored belief at Chepauk and gave Chennai fans a glimpse of what lies ahead.
