- Landed in the UK from India the night before
- Back at the ground for medical testing in the morning
- Scores 69 off 42 balls in Hawks win over Essex
What a Blast debut for Tristan Stubbs! He scored 69 off 42 balls less than 24 hours after arriving from the IPL. Stubbs signed for the Hawks in February, having never played in the Blast.
He was also named No. 1 in our list of the top T20 overseas players in the Blast.
The South African top scored at the Utilita Bowl on Tuesday, as Hampshire won by 30 runs over Essex for their first win of this season’s competition.
That innings came off the back of a hectic 24 hours for Stubbs. He said “I actually really enjoyed today so I’m glad I could play. I landed at eight o’clock last night, got to my accomodation just after 10, and I was here at seven thirty for medical testing, so I’ve not had much sleep. All my pre-match things that I normally do are no longer going to happen, so yeah, I’ll take it!”
Stubbs T20 career
Stubbs has played this format of the game around the world. Domestically, he has played 181 games and scored 3740 runs at 34.31 and a strike rate of 141.98. For South Africa, Stubbs has scored 967 runs at 30.21 and a strike rate of 133.01.
Stubbs played for Delhi Capitals in this season IPL, where he scored 275 runs at 34.38 and a 127.31 strike rate.
“T20 is a weird game”
On Tuesday, Stubbs and fellow overseas signing Hilton Cartwright built a strong partnership, coming together to take their total to 200-4. It was then the bowling of Scott Currie who kept Essex to only 170-7, with figures of 4-18.
Stubbs struck five sixes and three fours in his innings, whilst Cartwright hit 46 * off 21 balls. Stubbs said “We spoke about whatever we can get in the last four (overs), we can get a good score if we’re in together. We just needed some momentum, and then we got some and just ran with it at the end, T20 is a weird game.
“I walked in and I actually was hitting the ball really well from the start, but I kept hitting the fielders. Ideally, I wouldn’t want to start that slowly, generally a bit more structured to then go at the end but yeah, I felt really good.
