Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is more than prepared for an India debut, according to Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara.

With 776 runs from 16 games at an average of 48.50 and an incredible strike rate of 237.30, including one century and five fifties, the young wonder had an incredible IPL 2026 campaign and won the Orange Cap. Alongside his outstanding season, Sooryavanshi has earned a call up to the India A squad for next month’s tour of Sri Lanka.

The 15-year-old scored 96 off 47 balls on Friday, but his heroic effort was in vain as the Royals lost to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 and were unable to advance to the final. Sangakkara, who believes Sooryavanshi will soon receive his senior India cap, lauded the young player’s maturity and poise, stating that he has demonstrated remarkable game awareness and a great sense of responsibility throughout the competition.

“You never really know if anyone is ready until they play. But with everything he has shown against some of the best bowlers in the world, I think he’s more than ready to take on any challenge that you throw at him. I’m sure he’ll get that call-up very, very soon,” Sangakkara said in the post-match press conference.

“He has batted with a lot of maturity and shouldered the responsibility of that opening partnership really well for us this season,” he added.

Against the Titans, Sooryavanshi also faced a significant obstacle when Kagiso Rabada hit him in the helmet with a stinging bouncer. But before resuming his innings, the Royals opener shown incredible bravery by swiftly regaining his composure following a required medical assessment.

“And yes, any batter getting hit is scary. I’ve seen a lot of people get hit, and it’s never a good sight. But I’m glad he’s OK,” Sangakkara added.

Even though Sooryavanshi was only four runs away from a century in Qualifier 2, the 15-year-old still had a lot to be happy about. He broke Andre Russell’s previous record by becoming the fastest hitter to amass 1,000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced during his 96-run performance.

In terms of innings, he also became the second-fastest player to reach the milestone, only surpassed by Shaun Marsh, who did it in 21 innings.

All eyes will be on Sooryavanshi when he joins the India A team for the tri-series in Sri Lanka, which begins on June 9, following a record-breaking IPL season.
