Friday night is Blast night. Four more games in the Women’s Vitality Blast saw the leaders Surrey head to Hampshire, Somerset Women travelled to face Lancashire Thunder, Durham Women hosted Warwickshire Bears Women and Essex Women headed North to take on Yorkshire Women.

Hampshire Hawks Women v Surrey Women

Hampshire Hawks Women are the queens of the tight game. Surrey batted first at the Utilita Bowl and were restricted to 121 all out. Alice Davidson-Richards top scored with 40 off 38 balls, however no one managed to hang around long enough. Laura Harris scored a quick fire 25 off 12 balls and Alice Monaghan scored a run-a-ball 21. Amanda-Jade Wellington topped the bowling with superb figures of 3-25 off her four overs. Georgia Adams also took 2-20 from her four overs.

Hampshire started their innings full of confidence, having bowled Surrey out so cheaply. However things didn’t go to plan for the Hawks. At the start of the 11th over, the Hawks were 43-4. Georgia Adams (30 off 32) and Nancy Harman (43 off 26) saw the Hawks close in on the win.

Harman was out on the last ball of the penultimate over, leaving the Hawks requiring seven off the last over. The first five balls brought singles, and as they were going for two on the last ball, Rhianna Southby was run out meaning the game was tied. Ryana MacDonald-Gay bowled her four overs and took 2-20.

Lancashire Thunder v Somerset Women

Lancashire Thunder picked up their first win of the season after beating Somerset Women by seven wickets. Somerset Women batted first and started off well with 37 of the first 4 overs. However 37-0 soon became 52-3 as Rebecca Odgers (23 off 15), Anika Learoyd (1 off 2) and Niamh Holland (2 off 9) were back in the dressing room. Sophie Luff top scored with 42 (31), and Jess Hazell ended the innings with 23 off 29 as Somerset got to 137-6. Hannah Jones topped the bowling with 3-20.

Lancashire Thunder’s innings got off to a flyer with Eve Jones and Meg Lanning putting on 98 for the first wicket off 10.4 overs. Jones was out for 43 off 31, but Lanning showed her class and skill as she remained unbeaten on 75* off 48 balls to see the Thunder storm to victory of just 15.3 overs. Erin Vukusic took all three wickets to fall with figures of 3-30 off four overs.

Durham Women v Warwickshire Bears Women

Durham Women picked up back-to-back wins with 27 run win over Warwickshire Bears Women. The hosts batted first and were reduced to 22-2 off 4 overs. However a 80 run partnershire from 62 balls between Emily Windsor (31 off 39) and Bess Heath (61 off 39) gave Durham a bit of a platform. Some tight bowling meant that Durham only reached 140-5 from their 20 overs. Alexa Stonehouse was the best of the Bears bowling with 1-15 from her four overs. All the bowlers bowled well throughout the innings.

Warwickshire Bears Women just never got going as they were reduced to 71-5 off 11 overs, thanks to some very tight bowling. The Bears were all out for 113 off 18.1 overs, losing by 27 runs. The bowling figures for Durham make impressive reading. Heather Graham (2-23 off 3), Mady Villiers (2-23 off 4), Katie Levick (2-23 off 4) and Sophia Turner (2-13 off 3.1) all took 2 wickets each.

Yorkshire Women v Essex Women

Essex Women batted first at Headingley and set off quickly, getting to 60 without loss off 8 overs. After that though, wickets started to fall, and they ended their 20 overs being reduced to 146-7. Captain Grace Scrivens top scored with 53 off 40, with scores of 26 off 27 from Jodi Grewcock and 22 off 20 from Lissy Macleod. Sophia Smale chipped in with a quick 21 off 18 at the end of the innings.

Some tight bowling from Yorkshire kept the run rate in check, as Jess Jonassen took 2-23. Ines Blackwell (1-25), Maddie Ward (1-24), Ria Fackrell (1-28) and Holly Garton (1-27) all bowled well.

Yorkshire Women’s innings was full of starts, but no one really stayed long enough. Lauren Winfield-Hill (18 off 17), Emily Thomas (17 off 10), Jess Jonassen (10 off 14) and Sterre Kalis (23 off 16) all got going but tight bowling piled pressure on from the start.

Ami Campbell scored 26 off 22, and Maddie Ward chipped in with 19 off 24, but in the end, it wasn’t enough as Yorkshire Women were 143 all out, losing by just 3 runs with two balls left. Eva Gray starred with the ball taking 3-25. Sophia Smale took 2-20 and Grace Scrivens also took 2 for 27.
