Santner added to New Zealand Test squad
  • Recovered from shoulder injury suffered in the IPL
  • Replaces Dean Foxcroft, who scored 98 on debut
  • Santner originally ruled out of first Test

New Zealand have been boosted by the return of Mitchell Santner. Santner suffered a shoulder injury whilst playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He was expected to miss the first Test, starting on 4th June, but has made a quicker recovery than expected.

Santner’s return to the squad means that Dean Foxcroft, who scored 98 on debut against Ireland last week, returns to New Zealand.

Originally ruled out

The 34-year-old left arm all-rounder was set to miss the first Test against England, as well as the one-off Test against Ireland. Scans revealed that Santner had suffered a ‘grade three ACL shoulder injury’, which required a month’s rehab.

New Zealand has said that Santner would be monitored with a view to joining the squad for the second and third Tests. However, he arrived in the UK at the weekend, and will join the touring group before the first Test.

Test career

Santner is better known for playing in the shorter form of the game. He has played in 32 Tests in his career, taking 78 wickets at 33.37. He has also scored 1085 runs at 25.83. Santner made his Test debut against Australia in Adelaide in 2015. He scored 31 and 45 and took a wicket in each innings.
