Ben Stokes has been withdrawn from Durham’s County Championship match against Northamptonshire at the request of the ECB, sharpening expectations that England are preparing him for the New Zealand Test decider at Trent Bridge.
The move came on Sunday, 21 June, with Durham replacing Stokes with Colin Ackermann. Gus Atkinson has also been stood down from Surrey’s game against Glamorgan, according to The Guardian’s county cricket live coverage.
England are already deep into the final day of the second Test at The Oval, where New Zealand have forced Joe Root’s side into a heavy rearguard. The third Test starts at Trent Bridge on Thursday, 25 June, and the timing of the withdrawals makes the selection signal hard to ignore.
Stokes move points to England selection rethink
Stokes has been building overs and batting time with Durham after missing the second Test, while Atkinson’s removal from Surrey duty suggests England are managing more than one potential change before Nottingham.
The captain’s return would alter the balance of the XI immediately, giving England an all-round option as well as a central voice after a difficult Oval match. Atkinson, meanwhile, would add pace and control if selectors decide the attack needs fresh energy for the series finale.
Nothing in the withdrawals amounts to a confirmed England XI, but the ECB-requested timing is the clearest public sign yet that Stokes and Atkinson are firmly in the third-Test conversation.
