Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is in line for a landmark India debut against Ireland at Stormont after being named in the senior T20I squad for the two-match series.
The 15-year-old batter is part of Shreyas Iyer’s group for the Belfast fixtures on 26 and 28 June, giving India the option to hand him a first senior cap before the following T20I series in England.
Sooryavanshi’s inclusion was confirmed in the BCCI squad announcement, which listed him alongside Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and others for the Ireland tour.
Stormont could stage a major India milestone
The timing gives the Ireland series added weight. Sooryavanshi has already become one of Indian cricket’s most-watched young players after a spectacular rise through age-group cricket and the IPL, but a senior international appearance would move the story into a different category.
If selected, he would become the youngest player to represent India’s men’s senior side, passing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing mark from 1989.
For India, the decision is not only about talent. It is also about managing expectation around a teenager entering a senior dressing room under huge attention. For Ireland, the Stormont fixtures now carry an extra global hook, with Sooryavanshi’s name likely to dominate the build-up if he is close to the XI.
