Jai Moondra has put Ireland’s India series on a sharper edge after turning a surprise call from national selector Andrew White into a potential international debut against the country of his birth.
The 29-year-old Leinster Lightning all-rounder has been named in Ireland’s 14-man squad for the two-match T20I series in Belfast, where Lorcan Tucker begins his permanent tenure as T20I captain. Cricket Ireland said Moondra was born in Tonk, near Jaipur, and moved to Ireland in 2021 to pursue a master’s degree before rebuilding his cricket career through the domestic game.
Why Moondra Changes Ireland’s Balance
Moondra’s route is not cosmetic selection. Ireland are missing senior operators including Josh Little, Mark Adair, Paul Stirling, Curtis Campher and Barry McCarthy through injury, leaving Tucker with a reshaped group and limited proven seam depth.
That is where Moondra’s left-arm angle matters. White described him as a bowler capable of swinging the ball at pace, while Moondra said his aim is to be aggressive, hit the stumps and stay unpredictable. Against an India squad already altered by Suryansh Shedge replacing Nitish Kumar Reddy, that variation gives Ireland a point of difference.
The first T20I takes place at Stormont on 26 June, followed by the second on 28 June. For Moondra, this is more than a personal circle closing. It is Ireland testing whether a domestic pathway success story can immediately trouble India’s next white-ball wave.
