Nat Sciver-Brunt will miss England’s final ICC Women’s T20 World Cup group match against New Zealand after the ECB decided her calf injury still needs more rehabilitation time.
The England captain suffered the problem while batting against Ireland and has not been cleared for selection, despite an MRI scan showing progress and a return to net batting on Wednesday, according to the ECB’s official update.
It leaves Charlie Dean set for another high-pressure leadership assignment, even with England already through to the semi-finals. The hosts became the first side to qualify after a 38-run win over West Indies, moving to four wins from four in Group B.
England protect Sciver-Brunt before knockouts
The key detail is timing. England do not need Sciver-Brunt to force qualification, but they will need her authority, middle-order control and all-round balance once the tournament becomes sudden-death cricket.
That makes this a conservative but logical call. The earlier West Indies selection picture has now shifted from short-term caution to knockout-stage management.
- England: qualified, 8 points, NRR +2.342
- New Zealand: still chasing a semi-final route
- Sciver-Brunt: progressing, but unavailable for selection
New Zealand gain a narrow opening
New Zealand still have to beat England to keep their own hopes alive, and Sciver-Brunt’s absence removes the home side’s most influential tactical voice from the XI.
It does not make England vulnerable by default. Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Heather Knight and Dean have already carried major responsibility in this campaign. But it does mean England’s final group match now doubles as a live audition for their Plan B before the semi-finals.
