Sophie Molineux has given Australia a clear new-ball route into India’s most vulnerable passage at Lord’s.
The left-arm spinner enters Sunday’s decisive ICC Women’s T20 World Cup group match as Australia’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament, with Cricket Australia’s preview crediting her with six wickets at an average of nine and an economy rate of 4.50.
That matters because India’s semi-final equation is brutally narrow. Australia are already through and almost locked into top spot on net run-rate, but India are likely to need victory to stay alive if South Africa beat Bangladesh in the earlier Lord’s fixture.
Molineux gives Australia a powerplay lever
India’s top order has carried a heavy load through the group stage, but the first six overs now look like the pressure point. Molineux has taken a wicket in her first over in three of Australia’s four matches, a trend that directly targets Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma before India can settle.
ReadCricket has already examined Shafali’s pressure point against Australia. This is the other side of the same contest: Australia can turn scoreboard control into selection pressure before India’s middle order even arrives.
The wider table gives the game its edge. Australia have eight points and a net run-rate of 4.724, while India sit on six points with South Africa also chasing the final Group 1 semi-final place. Cricket Australia reports that an India win would send them through and likely into a semi-final against England at The Oval.
For Australia, this is about rhythm and route. For India, it is survival. If Molineux lands her first over again, Lord’s may know the direction of the semi-final race long before the chase begins.
