Gill Captaincy Call Turns England ODIs Into India Succession Test

Shubman Gill’s ODI captaincy has moved from succession theory to a live England examination.

The BCCI confirmed India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against England, naming Gill as captain and Shreyas Iyer as vice-captain. The selection keeps Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah in the touring group, giving India a senior core around a captain now being tested outside home conditions.

Gill Gets The Authority Test

The official squad list puts Gill at the centre of a delicate transition. Rohit and Kohli remain the headline batting names, while Bumrah’s presence keeps the attack anchored by India’s best fast-bowling banker. The leadership signal is unmistakable: the England ODIs are about whether Gill can command a senior dressing room in a hostile away series.

India open at Edgbaston on 14 July, move to Sophia Gardens on 16 July and finish at Lord’s on 19 July. Those venues give Gill three different tactical conditions in six days.

Selection Leaves Little Hiding Space

The squad includes KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan as wicketkeeping options, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel as all-round spin balance, and a pace group of Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar.

Virat Kohli’s selection is marked subject to fitness clearance, while Varun Chakaravarthy remains in rehab after a left foot injury sustained during the IPL. ReadCricket has already tracked India’s schedule pressure and selection scrutiny. Gill has the title. England will test how much authority comes with it.
