Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s England wait has become India’s sharpest selection call before the first T20I at Chester-le-Street.
The BCCI named the 15-year-old in India’s T20I squad for the England tour, placing him inside Shreyas Iyer’s first major overseas white-ball test as captain. The tour opener is listed for 1 July at the Riverside Ground, where India must decide whether this is the moment to expose Sooryavanshi or keep him in reserve.

The debate hardened after Cheteshwar Pujara urged caution over an immediate debut, with India arriving in England after a damaging short-series defeat in Ireland. That makes the call less romantic than it looks: Sooryavanshi brings left-handed acceleration, but England’s new-ball pair and Riverside conditions could turn a debut into a harsh audit.
Iyer’s safer route is to lean on established options around Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson, then hold Sooryavanshi for a cleaner entry point later in the series. The bolder route is to answer England’s preparation head-on, especially after Harry Brook’s side named a settled XI through the ECB.
