Brits Surge Makes South Africa’s LA28 Place More Than A Ranking Prize

South Africa’s confirmed place in the women’s cricket event at LA28 now carries more weight than a simple qualification line.

The ICC and IOC have confirmed that six nations will compete in each Olympic T20 event, with Australia, Great Britain, India and South Africa the first women’s teams through from the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The places were awarded to the highest-placed eligible finishers from Oceania, Europe, Asia and Africa, with one berth capped per continent.

For South Africa, that timing matters. Tazmin Brits’ unbeaten 114 against the Netherlands did more than keep the Proteas alive in the World Cup semi-final race. It also sharpened the sense that their Olympic route has been earned through tournament pressure, not protected by rankings alone.

Brits Gives South Africa’s Olympic Case A Harder Edge

Brits was named Player of the Match after driving South Africa to 208 for one in Bristol, with Laura Wolvaardt adding 45 in a 121-run opening stand. The Netherlands were then held to 120 for eight, leaving South Africa with an 88-run win and a major net-run-rate swing.

That performance sits neatly alongside the wider LA28 pathway. The ICC has confirmed that the final Olympic spots will be shaped by rankings, host eligibility and a new ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027. There will also be a dedicated Caribbean route if West Indies’ ranking position requires one, because West Indies are not a single IOC-recognised National Olympic Committee.

ReadCricket has already covered the wider LA28 qualification route for India and Great Britain. South Africa’s version has a different texture: Brits’ surge has turned an administrative milestone into a warning shot before the Olympic cycle properly begins.
