# Middlesex Fight ECB Overseas Player Ruling Over Du Plooy

Middlesex captain Leus du Plooy will miss the remainder of the 2026 domestic season following the club’s failure to meet an overseas registration deadline.

The 31-year-old was automatically reclassified under England and Wales Cricket Board regulations after declaring his intention to commit his [international future to South Africa](https://readcricket.com/2026/09/07/leus-du-plooy/). The decision voided his local status, which he previously held via a Hungarian passport.

Middlesex missed the September 6 deadline to register him for their vacant overseas slot. The [severe registration error](https://readcricket.com/2026/09/08/middlesex-lose-du-plooy-for-season-after-registration-error/) rules the left-hander out of the Metro Bank Cup final against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge on September 20, the county’s first List A final since 1990.

## Legal Challenge Remains Active

The oversight occurs during a period of executive turnover at Lord’s, with Director of Cricket Alan Coleman departing at the end of the season and Julie Harrington recently installed as chief executive.

Speaking to [BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/articles/c046r7625dwo?at_campaign=rss&at_medium=RSS), Coleman confirmed the county had sought external advice.

“We’ll continue to work with our legal teams and discuss this with the ECB, and hope for a positive resolution which means that Leus can play domestic cricket in England for the rest of the season,” Coleman said.

He added: “We missed that deadline because we didn’t receive the ECB communication until Monday morning.”

## Max Holden Assumes Captaincy

Middlesex released a formal statement acknowledging the regulatory breach.

“As a result, Leus is required to be registered as an overseas player in order to continue playing for Middlesex. The deadline for the registration of overseas players for the 2026 season was Sunday, 6 September, meaning that it is now not possible for the club to register Leus and select him for the remainder of the season,” the club confirmed to [Wisden](https://www.wisden.com/series/county-championship-2026/cricket-news/relegation-threatened-county-face-huge-points-deduction-over-bizarre-championship-pitch).

Max Holden has assumed the captaincy for the ongoing County Championship match against Durham.
