Sophie Molineux named Australia captain despite hip injury
Sophie Molineux is Australia’s new captain. The Sophie Molineux Australia captain call headlines the squad picked for Australia’s first series since winning the T20 World Cup. She takes charge while managing a hip injury. Molineux will sit out this week’s WNCL state matches as selectors monitor her fitness.
National selector Shawn Flegler says her involvement in the series will be assessed day by day. It is a bold vote of confidence. Selectors have handed the captaincy to a player carrying a physical concern, just weeks after the World Cup triumph.
Official squad announcement and Shawn Flegler details
Flegler laid out the situation when the squad dropped. “Sophie has been named in the squad but has been managing a hip injury, so her involvement in the series will continue to be assessed over the coming days,” he said, according to Fox Sports Australia reporting.
Grace Harris misses out too. Flegler pointed to a smaller T20 squad as the reason. “With the T20 squad reduced in size and limited opportunities during the World Cup, Grace is unlucky to miss out on selection but remains in the frame moving forward,” he said. She stays part of the wider squad picture despite the setback.
Darcie Brown and Lucy Hamilton injury context
Lucy Hamilton is out of the one-day series against Bangladesh. She strained her quad at Queensland training. “Lucy suffered a mild quad strain at training, but we’re hopeful she’ll recover in time to be fit and firing for the T20 series,” Flegler said. Selectors are targeting her return for the three-match T20 series against New Zealand, starting on October 18.
Darcie Brown is missing the series too. A back injury surfaced after she returned from Australia A’s tour of India. “Darcie was assessed on her return home from the Australia A tour to India and has a back injury. Her availability for the Women’s Big Bash will be determined over the coming weeks,” Flegler said. It caps a tough injury period for the squad, one that echoes the men’s own Aussie speedster injury returns earlier this year.
Upcoming schedule against Bangladesh and New Zealand
Australia face Bangladesh before turning to New Zealand. Flegler believes the schedule will sharpen the squad straight after the World Cup. “These six matches will provide a great challenge for the side following the World Cup, with both Bangladesh and New Zealand presenting different challenges,” he said. “Bangladesh will be a really good test, particularly with the quality they have in their bowling attack.”
Flegler also linked the fixtures to longer term planning. He pointed to conditions ahead of the Champions Trophy in India. “It’s also a great opportunity for our batters to get exposure to subcontinent-style bowling ahead of the Champions Trophy in India,” he said. The Sophie Molineux Australia captain era begins, then, with an injury watch and a series doubling as preparation, arriving in a busy stretch for Australian cricket as the wider group also looks to prepare for South Africa.
