  • Gloucestershire aim for 2026 County Championship promotion after a transitional 2025 season
  • Strong batting core led by James Bracey provides foundation for success
  • Rebuilt bowling attack key to turning consistency into winning results

Gloucestershire enter the new County Championship season with a sense of renewal. Questions remain after a difficult red-ball campaign last summer. This Gloucestershire season preview focuses on a side aiming to push for promotion after falling short last year.

Under Mark Alleyne, the team won just two matches and finished sixth in Division Two. That return disappointed, but there were still encouraging signs. The batting unit, in particular, showed enough quality to suggest improvement is within reach.

Gloucestershire season preview: Strong batting core sets the platform

The top order was productive for much of the season. James Bracey led from the front with 1,010 runs. He anchored the innings well and set the standard. Miles Hammond, Ben Charlesworth and Oliver Price also impressed, each passing 890 runs in a strong collective effort.

Even so, Gloucestershire often failed to turn solid starts into match-winning positions, especially away from home where control slipped too easily. Converting batting strength into consistent victories will be vital if they are to mount a serious promotion challenge this year.

Major squad overhaul: Can the new-look bowling attack deliver?

The bowling attack now looks very different. Last season’s leading wicket-taker, Ajeet Singh Dale, has moved on. Several other seamers have also departed. Zaman Akhter, Josh Shaw, Tom Price, Dominic Goodman and Archie Bailey all leave significant gaps.

Among those who remain, Matt Taylor is likely to carry much greater responsibility after taking 18 wickets in eight matches last season. Graeme van Buuren should also be important, offering balance and experience as an all-round option.

Smart recruitment could reshape Gloucestershire’s season

Recruitment has been swift and sensible. Australian seamer Gabe Bell arrives with strong credentials. He is currently among the leading wicket-takers in the Sheffield Shield, with 28 wickets at an average of 27.39. Will Williams adds further pace, while Craig Miles strengthens the depth.

There is also a welcome return for Cameron Bancroft, whose presence across formats should add experience, stability and proven run-scoring quality. In white-ball cricket, D’Arcy Short and Dawid Malan bring extra firepower. Liam Scott is set to feature later in the campaign.

Gloucestershire season preview: Best fantasy cricket picks and value options

From a fantasy cricket perspective, Gloucestershire have several attractive options. Bracey stands out as the premium pick. He offers strong batting returns and dependable wicketkeeping points. Last season, he produced five stumpings and 43 catches.

Van Buuren looks like a solid mid-price all-round choice. He can contribute in both disciplines and should offer steady value. Charlesworth remains an appealing budget batter at £5.5m. He rarely misses games and continues to return value.

Joe Phillips has already shown that he can deliver major value at the lower end of the market, with 533 runs in only seven appearances marking him out as a notable budget option. He could be one to watch again.

Fixture list analysis: Early tests and defining mid-season run

The fixture list offers an early test. Gloucestershire begin at Lord’s. Home matches against Durham and Lancashire follow soon after. That makes early momentum harder to build.

Matches against Kent and Northants may provide better opportunities, although Gloucestershire will need greater consistency to take advantage and turn those fixtures into positive results. A demanding mid-season spell, with three away trips in four games, could shape the campaign.

The run-in includes both difficult away days and winnable home fixtures. That should give Gloucestershire a chance to finish strongly.

Can Gloucestershire turn potential into promotion success in 2026?

This is a side in transition but it is not short on ambition. There is enough quality within the squad to suggest they can compete more consistently this season. If the reshaped attack settles quickly and the batting unit maintains its progress, Gloucestershire could turn last season’s frustration into a much more convincing push this time around.
