- Pat Cummins could skip IPL 2027 due to workload concerns
- Australia face Tests in India, the Ashes and the ODI World Cup
- Fitness and recovery will influence the final decision
Australia captain Pat Cummins has suggested he could sit out the 2027 Indian Premier League as he prepares for what promises to be one of the most demanding periods of his international career.
The veteran fast bowler, who has led Sunrisers Hyderabad in recent IPL seasons, says Australia’s packed calendar featuring a major Test tour of India, a landmark clash against England, an Ashes campaign and the ODI World Cup could force him to reassess his franchise commitments.
At 33, Cummins remains one of the most sought-after players in global T20 cricket. The Australian skipper has earned approximately US$1.9 million per season as Sunrisers Hyderabad captain over the past three IPL campaigns. However, with Australia facing an intense stretch of high-profile international assignments, the pace spearhead indicated that national duties are likely to take precedence.
Australia face a demanding international schedule
Australia will tackle a demanding schedule in 2027, beginning with a four-Test tour of India in January and February before meeting England in the 150th-anniversary Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March. The side will then head into a full Ashes campaign ahead of the ODI World Cup in southern Africa later in the year.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cummins acknowledged that sacrifices may be necessary.
“Something has got to give at some stage next year and it’s not going to be test matches or an ODI World Cup,” Cummins told the Sydney Morning Herald.

IPL future remains undecided
The Australian captain said a final decision on IPL participation would be made closer to the tournament, with fitness and workload management likely to play a significant role.
“I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don’t really want to lock in anything.”
Cummins reiterated where his priorities lie as Australia targets success across multiple formats.
“The priorities for me are always the test matches and that ODI World Cup. I dare say if I play all of India, I need some sort of break before a pretty gruelling Ashes series.”
Injury management remains a key factor
The fast bowler has already experienced the challenges of balancing workload and recovery. He featured in only the Adelaide Test during Australia’s most recent home summer and also missed the T20 World Cup while managing an ongoing back injury.
Australia’s pace attack is also entering a period of transition, with fellow veterans Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc now well into their 30s. As a result, rotation and rest periods could become increasingly important as the team navigates a demanding schedule.
Australia Captain Pat Cummins hints at bowler rotation plans
Cummins revealed selectors and team management are prepared to remain flexible, even if it means resting key bowlers during parts of the home summer, including the series against New Zealand around the turn of the year.
“It’s possible. I think we’re fairly open-minded to anything, as we’ve seen over the last couple of years,” Cummins said.
The Australian captain added that preserving his fast bowlers for the biggest contests ahead could shape selection decisions over the coming months.
“I see a world where we’re potentially winding some bowlers down, even say at the back end of an Indian series if they don’t look like they’re going to play, to give them an extra rest ahead of the Ashes.”

Rewarding period awaits Australia
Despite the challenges ahead, Cummins believes the demanding schedule could ultimately become one of the defining chapters of this Australian team’s journey.
“It’s going to be a big push the next 18 months or so, but I think we’ll look back on it hopefully and see it as one of the more rewarding periods of our career.”
With a four-Test series in India, a historic one-off Test against England, the Ashes and a World Cup all packed into a single year, Australia’s captain appears ready to put country before franchise cricket. Whether that means an IPL absence remains to be seen, but Cummins has made it clear that the road to the 2027 World Cup is his primary focus.
