Former Australian cricketer David Warner has been charged with drink driving, after Police were alerted to a van stopping short and parking up at a roadside breath testing unit at Maroubra in Sydney.

After he failed the initial test, Police arrested Warner and took him to Maroubra Police Station for further testing, and that test gave a reading of 0.104, which is more than twice the legal limit in New South Wales.

Further Education for players

Cricket New South Wales (CNSW), which has maintained a 23 year partnership with Transport for NSW, said it will continue to educate Warner and all players “on the importance of safe driving.”

CNSW CEO Lee Germon said: “Cricket NSW is a strong advocate of safe driving, including avoiding drink driving, and takes incidents of this nature very seriously.

“David is aware of the seriousness of these allegations. We will support him through the upcoming process.”

Warner has returned to the Pakistan Super League as captain of the Karachi Kings. Their next game is against Peshawar Zalmi on Thursday (9 April).

He arrived in the PSL on the back of a magnificent Big Bash campaign, where he averaged 86.60 for the Thunder and was named captain of the tournament’s official team. He also signed a one year extension in January to continue playing beyond the age of 40 next season.

Since retiring from international cricket in 2024, Warner has stayed active in domestic T20 leagues in Australia and around the world. He has also become a regular on the Fox Cricket commentary team.

Across his international career, the left hander scored 8,786 runs at an average of over 44 in 112 Tests. His highest score was 335 not out against Pakistan. He also played a key role in Australia’s ODI World Cup wins in 2015 and 2023, and their first T20 World Cup title in 2021.

Warner is due to appear in court on 7th May.
