- Durham piling on runs against Gloucestershire
- Northamptonshire taking on Kent attack
- Worcestershire struggle at the home of cricket
There was no shortage of runs on show in the Rothesay County Championship Division Two as the second round of fixtures got underway, with batters largely on top across the country. Several sides piled on imposing first-innings totals, setting up intriguing contests as the matches head into day two.
Gloucestershire v Durham
Gloucestershire won the toss and elected to field at Bristol. Captain Cam Bancroft may have been left wondering what went wrong as Durham dispatched the bowling to all parts of the ground. Durham skipper Alex Lees led the charge with 129, eventually becoming the first wicket to fall with 305 on the board.
Emilio Gay, dismissed for just 5, could only watch on as David Bedingham (76*) and Ben McKinney dominated the remainder of the day, finishing with an unbroken stand of 214 and taking Durham to 456-2 heading into day two.
The only bowler with wickets is Will WIlliams, with figures of 2-107 from 18.1 overs. Matt Taylor bowled tidily with figures of 0 -54 from 16 overs, but nothing else from any of the other bowlers.
Kent v Northamptonshire
The best decision of the day belonged to Northamptonshire skipper Luke Procter, who won the toss and chose to bat first. His opening partner, Ricardo Vasconcelos, did not disappoint, as he struck 127 while Procter himself remains unbeaten on 131, the pair putting on 224 for the first wicket.
Procter was later joined by Calvin Harrison, who closed the day unbeaten on 124, as Northamptonshire reached 409-1 heading into day two.
With only the one wicket to fall, none of the bowlers stood out. Jas Singh took that wicket, with figures of 1-95 off 14.1 overs. They will be hoping for a better day on day two.
Lancashire v Derbyshire
Derbyshire won the toss at Old Trafford and elected to field, a decision that initially looked justified as Lancashire slumped to 11-2. However, Josh Bohannon (73) and Marcus Harris (125) had other ideas, sharing a 146-run stand for the third wicket to rebuild the innings.
Michael Jones and Matty Hurst then chipped in with 44 and 32 respectively, helping Lancashire to a total of 351 all out. Shoaib Bashir led the bowling effort with 4-76, supported by Ben Aitchisonโs 3-57.
Derbyshire were left two overs to bat at the end of day one, but that was enough time for Mitch Stanley to remove Caleb Jewell for 0 so Derbyshire ended the day 0-1 from 9 balls, 351 runs behind.
Middlesex v Worcestershire
What a day at the Home of Cricket. Middlesex won the toss and chose to field first at Lordโs. When Jake Libby fell for 0 with the score on 10, it looked like a sound decision.
However, resistance from Dan Lategan (31) and Brett DโOliveira (75) helped Worcestershire recover to 191 all out. Ryan Higgins was the pick of the bowlers with 3-39, while Seb Morgan and Naavya Sharma took two wickets each.
Middlesex would have felt they had done well and had a chance to build a first-innings lead. However, early wickets put them on the back foot, with Sam Robson and Josh de Caires both dismissed at 16, followed by Leus du Plooy at 32.
Worcestershire seized the momentum, leaving Middlesex struggling at 91-6 by the close, still 100 runs behind with only four wickets remaining. Olly Hannon-Dalby led the charge with 3-26 and will complete his 12th over in the morning, while Tom Taylor supported well with 2-13 from 10 overs.
