England seamer Josh Tongue has signed a new three-year deal with Nottinghamshire, keeping him at the County Champions until the end of the 2029 season.

Career so far

Tongue played for Worcestershire from u10s (aged 6) to the Men’s first team, and made his First-Class (FC)debut against Oxford MCCU in 2016. He took a total of 175 wickets at 27.57 for Worcestershire, and eight T20 wickets at 34. He scored 682 runs in 69 innings at 9.88.

Tongue then signed for Nottinghamshire at the beginning of the 2024 season, taking 31 wickets in seven FC games at an average of 22.87, and helping Nottinghamshire win their first County Championship since 2010. He took a match winning 5-100 to dethrone Champions Surrey and secure the win.

Whilst at Worcestershire, he made his England debut against Ireland at Lords in 2023. He took 5-66 in the second innings in that game, and was selected for the last Ashes series, playing in the last three tests.

In the Boxing Day test at the MCG, he became the first englishman in 27 years to win the Mullagh Medal, given to the player of the match, after taking 7-89 in the match. Tongue has played nine tests for England, taking 49 wickets at 26.36

“Absolutely delighted”

Speaking with club media after the announcement, Tongue said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to be staying at Trent Bridge for at least three more years. We have a brilliant squad here, and we made some unbelievably special memories with the Championship win last year that will stay with me for ever.

“I want to thank Peter Moores, Mick Newell, and Kevin Shine especially for all they’ve done for me, and I can’t wait to carry on repaying their faith in the years to come.

“I love playing here, and I feel my game has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, so I can’t wait to see what the future holds. I’m committed to giving everything for Nottinghamshire whenever I step out onto the field as part of the team, and I’m really excited about the next three years.”

Head Coach Peter Moores added:

“It’s great news that Josh has agreed a new contract, committing his future to the Club for the next three years. It’s a real boost to have current International players at the Club as it continually reminds everyone the opportunities that our game has to offer.

We all saw the impact he had on our matches last season, and to have that quality withing our bowling group gives everyone confidence. We all know how good he is on the field, but he’s also a great character off it, and I’m looking forward to seeing where he can take his game to in the years to come.

Tongue will be hoping that he can keep in form and in the eyes of the England selectors for this summer’s series of three tests against New Zealand and three tests against Pakistan.
