Punjab Kings take top spot after clinical chase
Chasing a daunting 196, Punjab made light work of the target, cruising home with 21 balls to spare. The charge was led by an assured Prabhsimran Singh, who remained unbeaten on 80 from just 39 balls, and a fluent Shreyas Iyer, whose 66 from 35 deliveries ensured there was no way back for Mumbai once the pair settled.
Mumbai did find a flicker of hope when Allah Ghazanfar removed two batters during the powerplay, briefly unsettling the chase. However, that promise quickly faded as Prabhsimran and Iyer combined with authority and composure. Both batters benefited from early chances, but neither looked back once set, turning the pursuit into a showcase of clean striking and calculated aggression.
De Kock century in vain as Mumbai fall short
Earlier in the evening, Mumbai had found inspiration in Quinton de Kock. Drafted into the side following an injury to Rohit Sharma, the South African seized his opportunity with a superb 112 off 60 balls.
His effort placed him in an exclusive group as one of the few players to score centuries for three different IPL franchises. Naman Dhir provided valuable support with a brisk 50 off 31 balls, yet the rest of the batting unit failed to build momentum, leaving Mumbai short of a truly imposing total of 195 for 6.
Arshdeep sets the tone with the ball
Punjab’s control with the ball was anchored by Arshdeep Singh, who delivered a masterclass in pace bowling. He struck early with the new ball, returned later to extract reverse swing, and maintained pressure through a disciplined middle phase to finish with 3 for 22 in his 4 overs.
Punjab Kings take top spot as winning run continues
For Prabhsimran, the innings marked another standout contribution in what is shaping into a remarkable campaign, taking his run tally to 211 runs from 122 balls this season. Iyer, meanwhile, continued his rich vein of form, registering a third successive half century and setting the tone from the moment he struck a boundary off his first ball.
The result leaves Punjab Kings firmly in control at the top, brimming with confidence and momentum. Mumbai Indians, in contrast, are left searching for answers after a fourth consecutive defeat.
Attention now turns to tomorrow’s clash between Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders.
