Before this week’s County Championship games start, we take a look at the top five run scorers from both divisions. Four of the top five are in Division One, and two of those are from the early pacesetters Somerset.
1. Jamie Smith – Surrey
Jamie Smith is no.1 in the list at the moment. He has amassed 396 runs from his four innings so far, at a staggering average of 99.00. His high score of 166 came against Leicestershire in a run fest at the Kia Oval. Smith featured in the Ashes tour, where he scored 211 runs at 23.44. He will be lookin got keep his place as wicketkeeper when the England team plays this summer.
2. James Rew – Somerset
Our reigning ReadCricket Player of the Week, James Rew is second on the list. He has scored 379 runs from five innings this season, with a high score of 122, scored against Nottinghamshire. His average of 75.8 is quite impressive too. He is being touted as a possible replacement at the top of the order for England. Certainly one to keep an eye on over the coming months.
3. Jake Lehmann – Hampshire
Our first overseas player in the top five is Australian Jake Lehmann. He certainly has some pedigree – his father is Darren Lehmann and his uncle is Craig White. So far this season, Lehmann has scored 337 from six innings, at an average of 56.16. He has a highest score of 92, scored against Yorkshire. He is in a bit of form as well,as he scored 76 and 50 in the last match against leaders Somerset.
4. Tom Abell – Somerset
Next on the list is Somerset’s other player in the top five – Tom Abell. The middle order batter has scored 329 runs so far this season, with a top score of 108 against Nottinghamshire. His average is 82.25, and is another one with dreams of playing for England, but at 32, he might not get that chance.
5. Leus du Plooy – Middlesex
Fifth on the list plays in the Second Division, South African Leus du Plooy of Middlesex. But his totals are no less impressive. He has scored 328 runs from five innings at 82.00. His highest score is the best of the top five, 182 against Gloucestershire. If Middlesex are going to gain promotion back to Division One, he will be a key player in the middle order.
