A familiar rivalry has resurfaced in English cricket circles as Kevin Pietersen launched a pointed defence of rising star Jacob Bethell, challenging comments made by former England captain Alastair Cook over the youngster’s decision to remain in the Indian Premier League.
Bethell, fresh from a breakthrough Ashes century earlier this year, has yet to feature for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the current IPL season. His absence from the playing XI has raised eyebrows back home, with Cook suggesting the 22-year-old would benefit more from time in county cricket.
Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Cook said:
“He’s not doing anything. Ideally he could come back and open for Warwickshire to help England.”
Pietersen Fires Back at Cook Over IPL Value
That view drew a swift and emphatic response from Pietersen, who took to X to dismiss Cook’s assessment and champion the value of the IPL environment.
Pietersen commented:
“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL. What it’s like to always be around the best players in the world.
“So his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn’t matter at all. Stay in India, Jacob. I know, even though you’re not playing, you’re learning and will be a way better player.”
The exchange adds another chapter to a long-running tension between the two former England team-mates. The original feud dates back to the controversial end of Pietersen’s international career following the 2013–14 Ashes tour when Cook was captain.
Pietersen has long argued in favour of players embracing the IPL, seeing it as a platform for growth both on and off the field. During his career, that stance often placed him at odds with England’s traditional approach to player development.
Cook, by contrast, never featured in the IPL during a distinguished Test career that yielded 12,472 runs, a record later surpassed by Joe Root. Knighted in 2019, Cook remains a prominent voice in English cricket discourse.
Bethell Backs Decision Amid England Focus
For Bethell, the debate comes at a crucial moment. After his composed century in Sydney, he appears set for a place in England’s side for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s on 4 June, just days after the IPL final. Yet he has not played competitively since 5 March and has featured sparingly in first-class cricket over the past year.
Pietersen remains adamant that the benefits of staying in India far outweigh any lack of match time.
Pietersen added:
“By practising with the best players in the world. By watching very closely the best players in the world. By speaking to the best coaches in the world.
“By building life-long friendships with the best players in the world. By acquainting himself with India so that whenever he tours India, it’s easier for him. If you think playing a county game in Derby in April is better for his development, I can’t help.”
Bethell himself has echoed that sentiment. Speaking on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast, he acknowledged the value of the experience, even without game time, stating:
“I feel better now than I was a month ago, just from getting time around the guys over here and the pure standard of cricket in India and the IPL.
“Every nets session, you’ve got hundreds of eyes on you, be it your coaches or the other players who are also looking at you, going, ‘Is this guy good? Is he not?’ You’ve got the people in the crowd with their phones on. You get exposed to a lot of stuff.”
While Cook has suggested Bethell could open for England if required, the young left-hander indicated a preference for his current role at number three, though he remains open to flexibility.
As England look ahead to a busy summer, Bethell’s development continues to be closely watched. Whether shaped in county grounds or under the bright lights of India, his trajectory appears firmly upward. This latest debate only adds to the intrigue surrounding one of the game’s most promising talents.
