At a glance

  • Derbyshire in a spot of bother
  • Coughlin ton helps Lancashire
  • Kent lose inside three days

On the third day of these County Championship games, we were treated to plenty of runs and a result, as the other two matches are finely poised.

Derbyshire v Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire are nicely positioned to win their first game of the season, as they have Derbyshire struggling on 117-3 following on, still trailing by 100 runs.

Derbyshire started the day on 144-3, looking to push on towards Gloucestershire’s impressive 498. However, that push didn’t quite materialise, as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Other than Wayne Madsen’s 65, Zak Chappell was the only batter who got close to that with 34. Derbyshire were all out for 281, and Gloucestershire enforced the follow-on.

In their second innings, Harry Came yet again went early, scoring five this time around. With Caleb Jewell (10) and Wayne Madsen (35) back in the pavillion, Derbyshire still need 100 runs to make Gloucestershire bat again. A couple of quick wickets for Gloucestershire in the morning will have them searching for that elusive win.

Durham v Lancashire

Bad light ended play early at Durham, but Lancashire are in a strong position going into day four.

Lancashire started their second innings in the morning after bowling Durham out at the close of play of day two. Durham must have thought they might have been able to secure the win as they reduced Lancashire to 72-6, a lead of only 147.

However, Michael Jones (72) stuck around with Paul Coughlin, who scored 100* and Lancashire declared on 260-9, a lead of 335 and Durham batting in the morning.

Matthew Potts (3-57) and Ben Raine (3-50) were the pick of the bowlers, but it’s down to the Durham batters to ensure they do not lose the game.

Worcestershire v Kent

Warwickshire started the day on 447-9 and didn’t add a run this morning as Oliver Hannon-Dalby was the last man out for 0. Kent knew they had a mammoth task of trying to get Warwickshire to bat again, after such a poor first innings.

However, that idea didn’t go as planned, as Kent were reduced to 38-3 after 10 overs. Zak Crawley offered a little resistance at the top of the innings with 31. Skipper Daniel Bell-Drummond chipped in with 30, but at 140-7, Kent were looking at a heavy innings defeat.

Keith Dudgeon (41) and Chris Benjamin, who top scored with 77, almost saw Kent to parity, but it wasn’t to be, as Kent were bowled out for 249, and lost by an innings and two runs.

Top of the bowling for Worcestershire was Tom Taylor, who took 5-56, and Beyers Swanepoel took 2-73.
