- Dhoni calf injury recovery timeline uncertain
The wait for MS Dhoni to step back into the Indian Premier League spotlight continues, with a fresh injury setback delaying his comeback for Chennai Super Kings in the 2026 season.
Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter has suffered a recurrence of a calf issue during a recent warm-up outing, forcing the team to adopt a more measured recovery plan.
Fresh Setback Slows Recovery
Dhoni had initially been expected to return within a couple of weeks after the original injury. However, the latest development has complicated that timeline. Fleming revealed that the decision to ease him back has been driven by the risk of aggravating the problem further.
Speaking after the match, Fleming offered a candid assessment of the situation:
“The calf is a tough one. If he takes off and rips it again, then he will be gone. We pushed it early and then in a warm-up game he tweaked it again. Since then he has been working hard just to get movement back into it.”
The coach stressed that Dhoni remains fully committed to his recovery:
“He is working hard with the physio and doing all the rehab. We are just waiting for the word, but he is doing everything he can.”
MS Dhoni Injury Update: Delay Continues Despite Positive Signs
Despite the setback, there have been encouraging glimpses. Dhoni has remained involved in training sessions, mostly focusing on batting practice through throwdowns. More recently, he has also been spotted doing light wicketkeeping drills, sparking optimism among fans.
Earlier, batting coach Michael Hussey had suggested that Dhoni would resume full wicketkeeping duties once fully fit, hinting that the intention remains unchanged.
With a five-day break before their next fixture, CSK are expected to continue monitoring his condition closely. For now, though, a return still appears some distance away.
CSK Searching for Momentum
On the field, Chennai Super Kings have found the going challenging without their talisman. The side has managed just three wins from eight matches so far.
Their latest outing ended in defeat against Gujarat Titans, who secured a convincing eight-wicket win after restricting CSK to 158 for 7 in 20 overs. The chase was completed in 16.4 overs. See the full scorecard of that match here.
Reflecting on the defeat, Fleming pointed to the difficulty his side faced early in the contest:
“It was very difficult. They bowled straight, got good bounce, and we just could not get a grasp on the wicket. The first 10 overs were tough in terms of conditions. From there we were always behind the game.”
Waiting for a Familiar Figure
For CSK supporters, Dhoni’s absence continues to be felt both on and off the field. His leadership presence and experience remain invaluable, particularly during a testing phase of the campaign.
There is quiet optimism within the camp that the veteran will return once fully fit. Until then, patience remains the key word as one of the game’s most iconic figures works his way back.
