Delhi Capitals have been dealt a fresh setback after Lungi Ngidi was ruled out for at least 2 matches following a frightening on-field injury during their IPL 2026 clash.

Lungi Ngidi Ruled Out After Frightening On Field Incident

The incident took place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against Punjab Kings, where Ngidi attempted a difficult catch in the 3rd over. Backtracking quickly, he lost his footing and crashed heavily onto the turf, striking the back of his head and neck in what immediately became a moment of deep concern.

Physios halted play for over 10 minutes as they attended to the pacer, who remained on the ground before staff placed him on a stretcher and took him to hospital in an ambulance. The silence around the ground reflected the seriousness of the situation, and players from both sides looked visibly shaken.

Positive Update After Hospital Scare

Medical updates later in the day brought relief as they confirmed there was no major damage. Doctors discharged Ngidi the same evening after scans, and he soon reassured fans himself.

“Thank you for the messages, all good,” Ngidi wrote on Instagram, offering a calm and positive update after the incident.

Despite that encouraging news, Ngidi must follow recovery protocols before returning. The International Cricket Council recommends a mandatory 7-day stand-down period for concussion cases, and Delhi expect him to follow that precautionary timeline.

Delhi Capitals Face Selection and Bowling Challenges

The injury immediately disrupted Delhi’s tactics. The team had initially lined up Sri Lankan quick Dushmantha Chameera as a like for like replacement, but they had already filled their quota of 4 overseas players. As a result, they brought in leg spinner Vipraj Nigam instead, leaving a gap in their pace attack.

Speaking after the match, Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao expressed both concern and frustration at the situation.

“Nobody wants to see this happen to a player but we missed his 4 overs,” Rao said in the post match press conference.

The absence of Ngidi was keenly felt in what turned into a record breaking contest. Despite a stunning 152* from KL Rahul, Punjab Kings chased down a massive 265, powered by a 126 run opening stand and a blistering 71* from captain Shreyas Iyer.

Delhi’s bowling unit, already under strain, struggled to contain the onslaught. This latest blow comes on top of earlier availability issues surrounding Mitchell Starc, who only recently joined the squad after fitness clearance and will be eligible to play from May 1.

There is, however, a sense of cautious optimism within the camp. Early signs point to Ngidi making a steady recovery, and the franchise will be hoping their key fast bowler returns soon as they push through a critical phase of the IPL season. View all of the upcoming IPL matches here.
