- Surrey v Sussex in derby match
There are four games scheduled this week in the County Championship Division One, with leaders Warwickshire and Essex having a bye. After a round in which every match ended in a draw, we’re hoping for a more exciting set of results this time around. You can see the full table here
Hampshire v Glamorgan
Hampshire will be without Jake Lehmann, as he has returned to Australia for personal reasons. His contribution with the bat will be missed, as he has scored 337 runs so far this season.
Hampshire had their bye last week, and their last game ended in a two wicket defeat to Somerset, so they will be looking to get themselves off the bottom of the table.
Hampshire Squad: Abbott, Albert, Baker, Brown (c), Currie, Dawson, Gubbins, Jack, Mayes, Middleton, Organ, Orr, Prest, Wheal, Yusuf.
Glamorgan played last week, gaining a draw against Leicestershire. Runs for Kiran Carlson (95), Sean Dickson (90) and Mason Crane (99) gave them a good foundation for a high score.
However, their bowlers will need to get wickets earlier in the innings to put the opposition under pressure. Glamorgan are in 8th position, still looking for that first win.
Glamorgan Squad: Crane, Carlson (c), Root, Kellaway, Gorvin, ul-Hassan, Hadley, McIlroy, Cooke, Tribe, Dickson, van der Gugten
Leicestershire v Nottingham
Leicestershire played out a draw against Glamorgan, after scoring 586-7 in their only innings. Jonathan Tattersall scored 112, his first since 2024 and Jake Weatherald retired hurt on 104. There is no news on whether Weatherald will play or not. Leicestershire sit in 7th, and are still looking for a win this season.
Leicestershire Squad: Holland (c), Cox, Davey, Eskinazi, Green, Hill, Hull, Patel, Patel, Ahmed, Scriven, Singh, Tattersall, Weatherald, Wood.
Nottinghamshire also played out a draw last week, despite being forced to follow by Warwickshire. During that second innings, Haseeb Hameed and Kyle Verreynne both scored 115. Ben Duckett also found a bit of form with 93. Nottinghamshire can go top with a win, as they currently sit in third.
Nottinghamshire Squad: Hameed (c), Clarke, Duckett, Haynes, Hutton, James, Lord, McCann, O’Neill, Patterson-White, Pennington, Slater, Stone, Tongue, Verreynne.
Somerset v Yorkshire
Somerset return after their bye week on the back of two wins against Essex and Hampshire. James Rew was named ReadCricket’s player of the week for their last game.
However, it was Tom Abell with 101* in their second innings against Hampshire that helped them secure a two wicket win. Somerset can also go back top, as they only sit one point behind Warwickshire.
Somerset Squad: Thomas, Lammonby, Abell, Rew, Vaughan, Gregory, Rew, Smeed, Pretorius, Overton (c), Leach, Shaw, Ball, Ogbourne.
Yorkshire played out a draw at home to Sussex last week, only batting once. Finlay Bean (105) and Sam Whiteman (101) were the mainstays of their innings of 511, in response to Sussex’s 502.
Another batter caught the eye though – Joe Root scored 96 in his first innings of the season. He also took 3-67 in Sussex’s second innings in the faint hope of a win. Yorkshire sit in 9th position, without a win as yet.
Yorkshire Squad: Bairstow (c), Bean, Bess, Coad, Duke, Hill, Luxton, Lyth, Revis, Richardson, Root, van Beek, Wharton, White, Whiteman
Surrey v Sussex
Surrey host Sussex on the batting paradise that is the Kia Oval. So far this season, there has been 2,657 runs scored at the Oval, in six innings, so an average of 443 per innings!
Runs are not the problem, it’s taking wickets that is a cause for some concern, as Surrey have only taken 32 wickets in three games. They have three draws so far this season, so if they want to win games, that is something they will need to address.
Surrey Squad: Burns (c), Abbott, Albert, Atkinson, Clark, Fisher, Foakes, Lawes, Lawrence, Pope, Sibley, Smith, Taylor, Topley.
Sussex also drew last week against Yorkshire, having won their first two matches. A crucial sixth-wicket partnership between John Simpson (136) and Tom Price (93) formed the backbone of Sussex’s first-innings total of 502.
In the second innings, Tom Clark’s 93 helped secure the draw. With the Oval proving such a batter-friendly surface so far, could this one be heading the same way?
Sussex Squad: Carson, Clark, Coles, Crocombe, Haines, Hudson-Prentice, Hughes, Ibrahim, Lamb, Leaning, Price, Robinson (c), Simpson, Tear.
